The Department of Educational Studies is advertising a doctoral studentship in Educational Work. Educational Work is a cross-disciplinary subject and a profession-oriented area of knowledge that focuses on the practice-based issues and phenomena that are central in education. The field includes the learning and socialisation of children/young people/pupils as well as the work and professional knowledge base of teachers. The subject has a clear focus on practice-based research that includes studying the organisation of schools and the teaching profession, as well as subject-specific contents in preschools and schools. More information about our researchers and our research in Educational Work is available on the departmental website: https://www.kau.se/en/educational-work
The doctoral studies of the advertised position will focus on the learning of younger children (aged 0–10) and align with ongoing research at the department.
The doctoral studentship comprises four years of full-time study and leads to a PhD. Applicants who have already completed a licentiate degree in the area of study can be given credit for two years of full-time study, which means that the doctoral study programme will comprise two years of full-time study. If the doctoral studentship includes departmental duties such as teaching or administration at 20% of full-time, the term duration may be extended to five years.
The doctoral student is expected to be based at Karlstad University. In addition, the doctoral student is expected to contribute to the study environment of the doctoral programme as well as relevant research environments in Educational Work.
To be eligible for doctoral studies, the applicant is required to meet the general and University-specific entry requirements and must be considered to have the ability required to benefit from the studies (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 7, Sect. 35).
To meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have been awarded a master-level qualification; satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 were at master level; or acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
To meet the specific entry requirements for a doctoral student in Educational Work, the applicant must hold a Bachelor of Arts in Education or in some other way have acquired equivalent knowledge, in the country or abroad.
Admission is based on individual assessment of the applicant’s qualifications, such as previous study results and the quality of any independent written projects from previous studies that are included in the application. An assessment will also be made of the applicant’s presumed ability to benefit from the doctoral programme. A research plan should therefore be included in the application. The research plan should be approximately five pages and outline the intended doctoral thesis project and its relation to the above-stated specialisation in the learning of younger children (aged 0–10).
The research plan will be evaluated both in terms of academic quality and in terms of relevance for the research domain in question.
A previous degree or professional experience from preschool, after-school care, or the first years of school is a valuable qualification. Prior experience from research in relevant areas is also a valuable qualification.
The doctoral studentship in Educational Work involves active participation in existing research and seminar environments. For this reason, the applicant needs to exhibit the ability to work both independently and in a group.
In addition, applicants should be proficient in spoken and written Swedish and English.
Upon admission to doctoral studies, the person will be offered the appointment of doctoral student (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 5, Sect. 3). The position comprises four years of full-time studies, or five years at a study rate of 80% with 20% teaching or other departmental duties. The position is fixed-term — one year initially, followed by possible extensions by a maximum of two years at a time. Start date as negotiated.
The salary for the doctoral studentship corresponds to the standard level of salary for doctoral students at Karlstad University.
