Karlstad University is welcoming applications for a doctoral studentship in Comparative Literature.

Comparative Literature research is conducted in several different projects spanning a wide range of areas within literary studies and literature education. Research is tied to the Research Group for Culture Studies (KuFo, www.kau.se/en/kufo-research-group-culture-studies), the research group Research on Subject-specific Education (ROSE, www.kau.se/en/rose), and the Centre for Language and Literature Education (CSL, https://www.kau.se/en/csl). The subject is also active in intra-university collaborations and partnerships with other universities in various forms, such as advertisements of doctoral studentships, doctoral courses, conferences, etc.

Terms of employment

The doctoral studentship comprises four years of full-time study and leads to a doctoral degree.

Doctoral students in Comparative Literature should have the ability to work independently and also be prepared to contribute to the work of the subject in different ways, for instance through accepting administrative or teaching-related tasks. You are also expected to contribute actively to the environment of Comparative Literature as well as to the larger research environment at the Department of Language, Literature and Intercultural Studies (ISLI).

Qualification requirements

To meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have been awarded a second-cycle qualification; satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were at second-cycle level; or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

To meet the specific entry requirements, the applicant must hold a Degree of Master (60 ECTS credits) with Comparative Literature as the main field of study, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way. Proficiency in Swedish and English is required. Additional language expertise is a valuable skill.

Admission

The doctoral studentship involves admission into the third-cycle subject area of Comparative Literature. Admission is based on individual assessment of the applicant’s qualifications and ability to benefit from the doctoral programme. Special emphasis is placed on previous study results and the quality of any independent written assignments included therein. Assessment is also based on the research plan, which provides an account of the planned thesis project, language proficiency, and the applicant’s intention to be present and contribute actively to the research environment. Applicants should have good social skills and the ability to work independently as well as in a group.

Further information

The doctoral studentship comprises four years of full-time studies, or five years at a study rate of 80% with 20% teaching or other departmental duties. The salary for the doctoral studentship corresponds to the standard level of salary for doctoral students at Karlstad University.
