Description
The Department of Engineering and Physics at the Faculty of Health, Science and Technology is looking for a postdoc researcher in physics, to participate in a research project on organic materials for energy generation and storage. The department has a strong research profile in the field of materials for solar energy applications. The research group, where the postdoc researcher will be active, focuses on the development of theoretical methodologies to investigate molecular and new materials for solar energy conversion, having a broad international network of collaborations. Additionally, the department offer an environment with strong experimental activities and the project has access to outstanding high-performance computing facilities through the Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC).

Duties
The main duties are to conduct research on the fundamental properties of organic materials for energy applications like solar cells and battery electrodes. In more specific terms, the project aims at the in-depth investigation of structure-properties relationships regarding charge photo-generation, charge transport, optics and ion insertion properties. The stability of the organic materials will also be investigated.

The work involves planning and conducting atomic scale modelling of polymeric materials combining first-principles theory with molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations. Novel methodologies based on genetic algorithms and machine learning approaches will also be developed and implemented. The post-doc is also expected to communicate results and participate in the project meetings with the other national and international partners. Participation in the writing of publications and conference contributions is also included in the tasks.

You are expected to actively participate in the day-to-day activities and the workplace community to promote a positive work environment and operational development

Qualification requirements
Eligible for appointment as postdoctoral researcher are those applicants who have obtained a PhD in physics or other close related subject relevant to the work or have achieved equivalent qualifications abroad, at the most three years prior to the end of the application period.

Older degrees may be relevant if there are special reasons, for instance parental leave, illness, clinical duties, commissions of trust, or other similarly special circumstances.

Excellent knowledge of English, in writing and speech, is also a requirement.

Assessment criteria
Special weight is given to

  • Documented knowledge and skills in first-principles methods for the description of electronic structure, optical and redox properties of molecular systems in complex environments (liquids and solvents) combining density functional theory with Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations.
  • Documented knowledge on the implicit solvation methods to assess the thermodynamics of redox activity in solution.
  • Documented experience with the study of organic molecules in solution.

Considerable weight is given to your experience of writing and publishing research articles in international journals, as well as international experience of research and collaboration.

We also attach considerable weight to the applicant's personal qualities, such as good collaborative ability, ability to work independently, good organizational ability, accuracy, and excellent communication skills. A positive attitude towards colleagues is a prerequisite.

For more information about qualification requirements and assessment criteria see “Appointments procedure at Karlstad University”.

Terms
The employment is a full-time fixed-term employment, limited to 24 months from the starting date. Starting date: September 1, 2021 or by agreement.
