Description
Cultural Studies can be taken as freestanding courses or as part of the Culture, Policy and Management Programme. It serves as the main field of study in a Degree of Bachelor. The programme is geared towards cultural policy –an independent policy area formed in the 1900s – as well as cultural heritage and contemporary culture. Distinctive programme features include collaboration with partners from the cultural sector and projects in partnership with arts and culture organisations at a municipal and regional level. The teachers’ research work is tied to KuFo, the Research Group for Culture Studies at Karlstad University, one of the University’s prioritised research groups. Karlstad University offers some master level Cultural Studies since 2019.

Cultural Studies also includes courses in the History of Ideas, corresponding to the A and B level, which can be studied as programme specialisations or freestanding courses. We are looking for a senior lecturer with expertise in Cultural Studies qualifications — specifically with regard to cultural policy, the contemporary cultural sector, and cultural heritage — and in History of Ideas. The duties of History of Ideas teachers at Karlstad University include theory of science courses and components in doctoral studies at other disciplines and faculties as they relate to knowledge traditions in science, technology, and the health sciences.

Duties
The appointment includes three principal categories of senior lecturer duties. The first category comprises teaching and supervision on the bachelor, master, and doctoral level. Service as course or programme director may be included. The second category comprises original research. You are expected to actively and continuously apply for external funds and grants, and publish in national and international forums. The third category comprises involvement in the discipline’s development and collaboration with partners from the arts and culture sector.

Qualification requirements
To be eligible, applicants are required to hold a PhD in the History of Ideas/History of Ideas and Science. Applicants must have demonstrated teaching expertise as well as a completed prerequisite course in higher education pedagogy. An applicant without higher education pedagogy qualifications may still be hired, provided the course in higher education pedagogy is completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment. For other eligibility requirements, please refer to the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4 Section 4, and Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure.

Assessment criteria
Special weight will be given to experience in research in the History of Ideas and Cultural Studies, and in teaching the History of Ideas and Cultural Studies. Equal weight will be given to qualifications in research and teaching. The applicant’s expertise in Cultural Studies should include contemporary culture and its underlying conditions with a focus on cultural policy perspectives, and have been acquired in academia (research/teaching) or in the cultural sector (in roles such as auditor, expert, coordinator, politician, or administrator). In the assessment of teaching skills and quality, special weight will be given to diverse expertise in Cultural Studies and experience in teaching related to cultural policy, the contemporary cultural sector, and cultural heritage — relevant aspects to a programme training future cultural scholars. Additionally, special weight will be given to research and teaching in the theory of science, with a primary focus on aspects related to science, technology, and health sciences. The ability for communication with the community at large and interdisciplinary collaboration will also be given special weight. Because the primary language of instruction is Swedish, special weight will be given to proficiency in spoken and written Swedish. Considerable weight will be given to personal qualities such as initiative and the ability to foster positive relationships with colleagues and students. Being physically present at the workplace and participating in activities concerning the whole discipline and department are expected and will thus be given considerable weight. Considerable weight will be given to experience in interdisciplinary teaching and the ability to move between disciplines and work with partners from a range of disciplines. Weight will be given to the applicant’s experience in collaboration with partners from the cultural sector.

The appointment will be made following a qualitative holistic review of competence and skills to determine which applicant has the best ability to perform and develop the duties at hand as well as contribute to the positive evolution of Cultural Studies as a discipline. If applicants have qualifications of equal value, priority will be given to the applicant whose experience in research and teaching is deemed most relevant to the discipline’s activities. The University places great value on gender balance in the organisation.

Terms
The appointment is a permanent position comprising 70% of full-time. Start date in 2021, by agreement. A probationary period may be required.

Application
The application should include well-documented qualifications. We would like you to list at least two references. Applicants are responsible for submitting a complete application to the University in accordance with the instructions in the advertisement and before the deadline. An incomplete application may jeopardise a fair assessment of qualifications.

The application should include:

  • a list of qualifications with two references
  • an in-depth account of teaching and research experience, including future plans, and an account of academic experience and vision with a particular focus on cultural policy, contemporary culture, and cultural heritage.
  • verification of a completed course in higher education pedagogy or an account of equivalent skills
  • an account of managerial, collaborative, and administrative experience within academia
  • an account of experience from the cultural sector
  • a list of publications (in multi-authored publications, the role of the applicant must be specified)
  • copies of course transcripts and certificates to verify degrees, other qualifications, and previous employment
  • works included for consideration, no more than 10 scientific publications and no more than 5 materials intended to convey knowledge, such as textbooks, computer programs for teaching, or popular science articles (in multi-authored publications, the role of the applicant must be specified)
