The Department of Social and Psychological Studies welcomes applicants for a senior lectureship in Social Work.

Description 

Social Work is part of the Department of Social and Psychological Studies along with Sociology, Psychology, and Gender Studies. The Department has a staff of 90, including 13 professors, 4 readers, 37 senior lecturers, 22 lecturers, and 13 doctoral students. Within the discipline of Social Work, a staff of 20 work with education, research, and external contacts. The discipline houses the Bachelor of Science in Social Work study programme and its 350 students. In addition to first-cycle education, we offer second-cycle and third-cycle studies.

The primary research areas for Social Work at Karlstad University are Critical welfare studies, Studies on health and social vulnerability at individual and group level, and Applied welfare studies. Research is also conducted within the framework of the multidisciplinary Forum for Violence Studies and Violence Prevention. Our active research project topics include the mental wellbeing of children and adolescents, honour-based violence and oppression, working conditions in social work, the role of the civil society in social welfare, and assessment and initiatives in social services. Our new senior lecturer will have every opportunity to help develop our research environment. Subsequently, we enjoy a close partnership with a research and development unit whose vibrant activities include studies based on practice, evaluations, and seminars and conferences.

Duties 

Your main duties will be instruction within the Bachelor of Science in Social Work study programme, which includes course coordination, supervision, and examination. You will have an active role in research, conduct your own research projects, and apply for external funding. Each and every employee plays a crucial part in our activities! Therefore, you are expected to take an active role in development and quality assurance, and to keep abreast of the trends within the discipline and of societal trends that affect social work. Additionally, supervision and teaching at a Master’s and third-cycle level may be required.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible, applicants are required to hold a PhD in Social Work or equivalent academic qualifications in another discipline that is relevant to the position. You are required to have documented pedagogical skill and have completed a course in higher education pedagogy. In special circumstances, the course in higher education pedagogy may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment. Assessment criteria 

Special and equal weight will be given to the demonstration of scientific and pedagogical skill in social work. Proficiency in Swedish and English will be expected due to the nature of the position and internationalisation being a priority. A candidate who does not meet this requirement may still be hired provided they actively work to acquire these language skills. Documentation of scientific and pedagogical skill is required for the assessment of its range and quality.

Considerable weight will be given to administrative skills and the ability for academic cooperation and collaboration with the larger community. For the purposes of this appointment, we value personal qualities that contributing to a positive working environment, such as the ability to cooperate, the ability to build good relations with colleagues, and a positive attitude towards colleagues and students. Considerable weight will also be given to the applicant’s sense of responsibility for their own duties, their ability to work independently, and their initiative.

Expertise in areas such as the elderly, disabilities, or leadership and organisation and/or counselling methodology.

Following a qualitative holistic review of competence, skills, and personal qualities, the applicant deemed to have the best ability to perform and develop the duties at hand as well as contribute to the positive development of the Bachelor of Science in Social Work study programme and Social Work as a discipline will be appointed. If applicants have qualifications of equal value, priority will be given to the applicant whose experience in research and teaching is deemed most relevant to the discipline’s operations. This is a permanent full-time position starting at the earliest convenience, as agreed upon by both parties.
