The discipline of Biology has a staff of around 40 and belongs to the Department of Environmental and Life Sciences within the Faculty of Health, Science and Technology. The Biology discipline offers Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Biology and teaching degrees in Biology Education and Science Education. Biology is a third-cycle discipline with 18 doctoral students currently enrolled. The discipline’s primary research areas are ecology and biology didactics. Research in biology didactics is conducted within the SMEER research centre (Science, Mathematics and Engineering Education Research) https://www.kau.se/en/smeer

The River Ecology and Management Research Group (RivEM) conducts basic and applied research on lakes, watercourses, and surrounding land. RivEM is an integral part of Biology’s [SS1] research and is primarily focused on the sustainable use of natural resources to solve environmental problems in ways that are mutually beneficial to human society and nature. RivEM’s research areas include the effects of hydropower on connectivity and habitat, aquatic-terrestrial interactions, winter ecology in relation to climate change, endangered species, nature conservation, and socioecological research (http://www.nrrv.se/). Many research projects are carried out in collaboration with industry partners, government agencies, and landowners.

Duties

The senior lectureship in Biology primarily focuses on [LG2] research in evolutionary genetics with a specialisation in evolutionary medicine or sexually antagonistic patterns. Duties also include the active planning, execution, and evaluation of teaching within the scope of the Biology Programme. The position may also include Master programme course components with a focus on ecology and nature conservation, and supervision of degree projects at the Bachelor and Master levels. We are looking for a senior lecturer who will actively contribute to the development of the Biology’s external network and to new externally funded research projects.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for the position of senior lecturer in Biology, applicants are required to hold a PhD or equivalent academic qualifications in Biology and have documented teaching proficiency. Applicants are required to have substantial research experience and the verified ability to publish in high-quality scholarly journals. Applicants are also required to have documented experience of leading research projects, managing gene databases, using modern statistical methods, and programming and carrying out systematic literature reviews and metaanalyses.

Pursuant to the Karlstad University Appointments Procedure, teachers must have the personal qualities required to perform the duties involved, and a completed course in higher education pedagogy.

Assesment criteria

In the assessment of scientific and pedagogical skills, special weight will be given to scientific skills.

Special weight will be given to

  • extensive and documented academic skills in evolutionary genetics with a specialisation in evolutionary medicine or sexually antagonistic patterns.
  • a history of successfully secured external funds.

Considerable weight will be given to

  • the ability to build good relationships with colleagues and students and to dedication to the work and the efforts of other people.
  • experience of communicating research findings to various target groups in society.
  • the ability for cooperation inside and outside the academic community.
  • the scope of an external network of international and national contacts within the discipline.
  • experience as a supervisor at a third-cycle level.
  • a high level of proficiency in Swedish and English in terms of communication and teaching.

In the assessment of eligible applicants, weight will be given to

  • comprehensive and documented pedagogical skills, based on the planning, execution, and evaluation of teaching, supervision, and examination.

The appointment will be made following a qualitative holistic review of competence and skills to determine which applicant has the best ability to perform and develop the duties at hand and contribute to the advancement of Biology as a discipline.

Terms

This is a permanent full-time position starting at the earliest convenience, by agreement. The appointment requires applicants to supply their own funding equal to 80% of a full-time position.
