Would you like to help develop an exciting research environment in the discipline of Sociology at a multidisciplinary department?

Description

Sociology at Karlstad University is a well-established intermediate-sized unit, which includes a PhD programme. The education and research profile is distinctly sociological, and lie at the forefront of the field. You will work closely with colleagues from many disciplines and have good opportunities for interdisciplinary research collaboration. The unit is quick to embrace new initiatives in education and research.

Sociology is part of a multidisciplinary department that also includes Social Work, Psychology, and Gender Studies. The unit comprises around 20 sociologists working with research and education. We are part of several research projects, national and international partnerships, and networks. Research at the unit is primarily specialised in: 1. Power and resistance, 2. Personal life, emotions, and the organisation of everyday life, and 3. Sociology of ageing. Other research areas within this framework include the sociology of death, gender, work organisation, and small businesses. We aspire to contribute to stronger, more in-depth research in our discipline and to create stable conditions for a dynamic and creative research environment with a strong sense of community. Multidisciplinary research projects are also conducted on a department level.

Sociology offers undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate studies. It includes a Bachelor’s programme in the social sciences: The Social Analysis Study Programme, and a Master’s (120 credits) programme: Critical Social Analysis. We have approximately 230 full-year and full-time students annually.

Duties

Duties comprise research as well as teaching and supervision. We are seeking a candidate who is ready to take on the role as head of research with the overarching responsibility for research and doctoral studies, and to represent the discipline’s research on a department and faculty level. The head of research will also ensure the development and continued high quality of the unit’s education, research, and collaboration.

As a professor, you are the leader of the unit’s research efforts and research environment, and we therefore welcome applicants who conduct research in one or more of the specialisations or areas represented at the unit. You will be expected to contribute to externally funded research by actively pursuing external funds and developing the joint processes around writing applications. Duties also include applying to fund doctoral students. You will also be expected to further collaboration with the larger community and with other higher education institutions in Sweden and abroad. To contribute to a vibrant work environment, we expect you to be a present and active part of the day-to-day operations and workplace community.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for the position of professor in Sociology, applicants are required to hold a PhD or equivalent in Sociology and have documented scientific and teaching proficiency. The position requires proficiency in Swedish and English. A candidate who does not meet this requirement may still be hired provided they are able to actively acquire these language skills.

Pursuant to the Karlstad University Appointments Procedure, teachers must have the personal qualities required to perform the duties involved. A professor must also have completed a course on teaching in higher education. If not completed at the start of the employment, the course on higher education teaching may be completed within two years. For other eligibility requirements, refer to the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4 Section 3, and Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure.

Assessment criteria

Equal weight will be given to scientific and teaching skills.

Special weight will be given to the applicant’s strong command of spoken and written Swedish and English.

Special weight will be given to the applicant’s recognised cooperation skills, strong academic leadership qualities, and ability to contribute to a good research environment.

Considerable weight will be given to administrative skill and familiarity with the academic system for higher education in the Nordics.

In the assessment of scientific skill, a valuable qualification is recently documented ability to secure funding for research, as is experience from international assignments, or experience with national and international networks. Another valuable qualification is prior administrative experience with research leadership and research in any of the specialisations or areas represented within the discipline.

Another valuable qualification is up-to-date experience with community collaboration, and research and development communication.

This is a permanent full-time position starting at the earliest convenience, as agreed upon by both parties. We expect the person appointed to be physically present in our environment.
