Description 

We are looking for a senior lecturer in Psychology, a subject with a staff of over 30 members in the Department of Social and Psychological Studies within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The Department also houses Gender Studies, Social Work, and Sociology.

The subject of Psychology offers first-cycle, second-cycle, and third-cycle education. In October, 2014, the subject was granted the rights to issue the Degree of Master of Science in Psychology, and the Master of Science in Psychology Programme was launched in the autumn of 2015.

In addition to this programme, several freestanding courses in the subject of Psychology are offered on a first-cycle and second-cycle level. Third-cycle education in Psychology has been offered at Karlstad University since the beginning of 2006. Within the subject of Psychology, several research projects are ongoing, most of which focus on the fields of clinical psychology and the psychology of everyday life.

Duties 

The primary duty is teaching Psychology, and it is important that applicants are able to teach from the very start of the employment. Teaching duties may span several fields within the subject, and it is worth noting that teaching qualitative method may be required.  The work primarily comprises teaching and supervision for the freestanding courses and the Master of Science in Psychology Programme, but teaching in contract education or third-cycle education may also be required. Classes will be taught in both Swedish and English. Tasks including teaching, supervision, examinations, course coordination, and course development are required as part of the position, as is the active participation in developing the subject and Department with regard to teaching, research, and community collaboration. The position includes time allotted for continuing professional development. The position is in Karlstad.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for the position of senior lecturer, applicants are required to hold a PhD in Psychology or equal scientific qualifications deemed relevant to the nature of the position and the duties included therein.

Applicants must have demonstrated pedagogical skills as well as having a completed course in higher education pedagogy. In special circumstances, the course in higher education pedagogy may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment. Proficiency in spoken and written Swedish and English will also be required.

Assessment criteria 

Special weight will be given to the applicant’s experience of teaching Psychology at a university college/university, and experience of teaching at a Master’s of Science in Psychology programme is a valuable qualification. 

In the assessment of scientific and pedagogical skills, special weight will be given to pedagogical skills.

Pedagogical ability will be assessed based on the ability to plan, conduct, and evaluate classes and on supervision and examination ability.

Weight will be given to documented experience and ability to lead and communicate development processes with colleagues and students with regard to teaching and examinations in your subject or discipline, and to a reflective approach to how your students learn and your role as a teacher.

Scientific skill will be assessed based on scientific quality and the scale of the research in terms of depth and range in the subject of Psychology. Having received external funding is also a valuable qualification.

Considerable weight will be given to personal qualities such as initiative, the ability to cooperate, and the ability to build good relations with colleagues and students and thus contribute to a positive working environment. Considerable weight will also be given to the person’s sense of responsibility for their duties and ability to work independently. The ability to work with the larger community will also be of importance to this position.

Terms 

This is a permanent full-time position (100%) starting at the earliest convenience. A probationary period may be required.

We expect the appointee to be present at the university on a daily basis.
