Background
The Ingesund School of Music (Musikhögskolan Ingesund, MHI) is part of the Department of Artistic Studies at Karlstad University and is located in Arvika, constituting the University’s second campus. MHI is a renowned university college with a healthy recruitment of students. MHI and Karlstad University are entitled to award Bachelor level qualifications in the fine, applied, and performing arts. The Bachelor Programme in Music was inaugurated in the autumn of 2016 and the Music Production Programme was inaugurated in the autumn of 2018. MHI also offers the Music Education Programme with a specialisation in upper secondary school, intended to qualify graduates to teach in upper secondary school, compulsory school, or performing arts schools.
To further develop the Ingesund School of Music, Karlstad University is applying to the Swedish Higher Education Authority for the entitlement to award the Degree of Master of Fine Arts. Additionally, it is the University’s strong ambition to establish a centre for research in artistic expression. Pursuant to these ambitions, we are appointing a professor in Musical Performance with a specialisation in Classical Vocal Studies to develop our research and education.
Musical Performance is a research area where focus is on the exploration of artistic issues with relevance to musical creation and delivery, often closely intertwined with personal performance of the art of music. Duties
Duties comprise teaching, supervision, and examination in the field of Musical Performance and Classical Vocal Studies on the first-cycle, second-cycle, and third-cycle level.
Integral to the position is the management of education and research in the field of Musical Performance along with the establishment of research connections to all levels of education.
The position entails the leadership and development of artistic projects and productions in partnership with students and colleagues at the Ingesund School of Music.
Duties include participation in national and international research networks.
Administrative work on boards and councils is a key duty. The position also includes continuous and close collaboration with the community at large and staying abreast of national and international trends in the field.
To contribute to a positive work environment and further the school’s activities, we expect staff members to be physically present and active in the day-to-day operations in Arvika.
Qualification requirements
To be eligible for the professorship in fine arts, applicants are required to have demonstrated artistic and pedagogical skill in Classical Vocal Studies. Pedagogical skill must be well documented in a way that allows for quality assessment. The assessments of pedagogical versus artistic skill will be equally thorough.
A professor should possess the personal qualities required to successfully carry out the duties, such as the ability to cooperate, sound judgement, responsibility, dedication, and a positive attitude towards colleagues.
Applicants must have completed a course in doctoral supervision and the prerequisite course in higher education pedagogy as specified in the appendix to the Karlstad University Appointments Procedure. In special circumstances, the course in higher education pedagogy may be completed within two years of employment during time allotted for continuing professional development.

A PhD in Musical Performance or another relevant subject on an artistic or academic basis is a valuable qualification.
Because a large portion of the instruction is in Swedish, a strong command of spoken and written Swedish and English is expected along with a close familiarity with the singing languages of Italian, French, and German.
