Description
CTF, Service Research Center at Karlstad University (www.ctf.kau.se), is one of the world’s leading research centers focusing on service. CTF has more than 70 researchers and doctoral students from disciplines such as Psychology, Business Administration, Information Systems, Engineering, Political Science, and Sociology of Religion. CTF constantly aims to include new disciplines to be able to respond effectively to current research challenges. CTF is known for extensive cooperation with the business and public sectors, and our research addresses key concerns for both.
Duties
The postdoctoral appointment will contribute to ongoing research at CTF. More specifically, the post-doc will be part of our research on how users (consumers, patients, citizens) use new technology to reach their goals and address needs that are relevant to them. The increasing use of new technology and digital services in general, and services based on personal information in particular, opens up opportunities for entirely new types of service. At the same time, these new services entail potential risks for individual users, since their functions often require personal information. This means that users are encouraged to share their data, for instance through using so-called Dark Patterns. In addition, new types of data are collected automatically through for instance the Internet of Things (IoT), in a way which usually prevents individuals from retaining some form of control. Our focus will be to study how users understand and process information and how they are influenced in their decision-making and behaviour when it comes to sharing personal information. In order to do this, the project will for instance develop and test interfaces. Studies will also focus on the opportunities and risks of the IoT, how users change their behaviour in order to use new technology, and how decision-making processes are affected by the experience of threat related to privacy issues when using new technology. Examples of empirical fields of study can be found in the public sector and also in commerce. In terms of methodological skills, a good grasp of experimental design, qualitative research, and literature review is important. Applicants are expected to have a clear ambition for excellence. The aim is for this research to contribute knowledge that is relevant for the academy as well as consumers and the external partners of CTF (organisations). The position comprises primarily research, while a small part, no more than 20%, usually involves teaching and other types of development work.
Qualification requirements
To be eligible for the postdoctoral appointment, applicants are required to hold a PhD in Psychology or Computer Science, or have equivalent qualifications achieved abroad. The candidate must have completed the degree no more than three years before the end of the application period, unless special grounds exist (such as sick leave, parental leave, clinical service, service as a union representative, or similar).
Assessment criteria
Considerable weight will be placed on the research qualifications of applicants, especially publications in international journals and conferences relevant for CTF research and the subject area of the appointment. Special weight will be placed on research experience and degrees relevant for research on privacy, with a focus on how individuals handle their personal information and what factors, such as for instance the visual design of interfaces, influence their decisions to share or not share personal data. Experience in the development of interfaces to investigate experimentally how decision-making is affected is a valuable qualification, as is experience of participation in national and international research projects and collaborations. Strong motivation and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are important traits since a great part of this research is conducted in cooperation with other researchers, across disciplinary boundaries, at CTF.
Terms
The position is a fixed-term, full time position over two years, starting as soon as possible. The two-year period may be extended if there are special circumstances, such as for instance parental leave or sick leave.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral appointment, applicants must not have been employed as post-docs on a centrally negotiated employment contract for more than a year in the same or a closely related subject at the same university/agency.
