Description

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science hereby invites applications for a permanent senior lectureship in Computer Science with a specialisation in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science consists of two research subjects, Mathematics and Computer Science, and has a staff of over 70. The research and education in Computer Science is focused on data communication and distributed systems, cybersecurity and privacy, and software engineering. The Department works closely with international, national, and regional partners from the academic community as well as private business. Computer Science is developing a new Master’s (120 credits) programme in Networked Systems and Cybersecurity to reinforce its core areas and strengthen its international position in education and research.

As senior lecturer, you will be included in and bolster one of the established research groups in Computer Science,

  • DISCO (Distributed Systems and Communication), whose research includes internet protocols, wireless systems, edge/cloud services, and next generation technologies, such as programmable networks, SDN/NFV, and 5G.
  • PriSec (Privacy and Security), currently focusing on different aspects of cybersecurity such as network security, privacy-enhancing technologies, and data security and privacy.
  • SQuaD (Software Quality and Digital Modernisation), whose areas of study include software architecture degradation and other forms of technical debt, quality assurance techniques, such as testing, for long-living systems, and the design and evolution of security- and privacy-critical systems.

Research is primarily funded through external projects, such as international and national projects funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020, the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research, the Knowledge Foundation, and the Swedish Internet Foundation. The new senior lecturer will play a vital role in the continued evolution of the Department’s artificial intelligence and machine learning education. We are looking for a driven candidate with solid experience in research and teaching related to artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, or an adjacent field relevant to the position.

Duties

Applicants are expected to further the evolution of the Department’s research in artificial intelligence, machine learning and data science by conducting high-quality research, expanding our international network, and contributing to an increase in research funds on a national and international level. The research is expected to bolster one or more of the Department’s research groups. You will also be expected to actively contribute as a teacher for first-cycle and second-cycle courses. Given that our new Master’s programme in Networked Systems and Cybersecurity is still under development, the duties of the position may be adjusted based on the applicant’s profile.

Duties also include supervision of doctoral students, course administration and development, and degree project supervision on first-cycle and second-cycle levels. The applicant that is ultimately offered the position will be expected to teach and supervise students partly in Swedish within a couple of years.

The position includes a research component of at least 50% for the first four years. After that there will be an opportunity to keep the research component at 50% or more depending on access to external funds and the direction of the Department and research group.

To contribute to a positive work environment and further the department’s activities, we expect you to be a present and active part of the day-to-day operations.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for the position of senior lecturer, applicants are required to hold a PhD in Computer Science with a specialisation in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, or another field relevant to the position, or hold equivalent qualifications.

The position also requires proven pedagogical skills based on solid, broad, and up-to-date knowledge about artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and related areas in Computer Science, and documented and established knowledge about learning and examination. Pursuant to the Karlstad University appointments procedure, teachers must possess the personal qualities required to perform the duties involved, as well as a completed course in higher education pedagogy. In special circumstances, the course in higher education pedagogy may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment. For more information about general eligibility, go to Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure: Appointments procedure KAU

An excellent command of spoken and written English is required.

Assesment criteria

Equal weight will be given to pedagogical and research skills. Special weight will be given to documented pedagogical experience and skill, especially with regard to artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and related areas. Weight will also be given to documented scientific skill and the applicant’s experience with national and international research projects in collaboration with partners from the academic community and from business. Special weight will be given to how well the applicant can be expected to enhance one of the Department’s existing research groups and to the research potential of the applicant (performance during the last five years).

Karlstad University places great value on personal qualities such as the ability to cooperate, a positive attitude towards colleagues and students, and showing initiative, and for that reason documented experience and skill related to this is a valuable qualification.

Terms

This is a permanent, full-time position starting in August, 2021, or as agreed upon by both parties. A probationary period may be required.
