Description

The Faculty of Health Science and Technology has an opening for a full-time post-doctoral research fellow with focus on Usable Privacy. The position is available within the Privacy & Security (PriSec) research group at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Karlstad University. Research within PriSec is focused on cybersecurity, privacy enhancing technologies (PETs), and usable privacy and security.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science consists of the two research subjects: Mathematics and Computer Science. It has a research and teaching staff of more than 70 persons. In Computer Science, research and education are focused on computer networking and distributed systems, computer security and privacy, and software engineering. Both research and education are conducted in close cooperation with international, national and regional partners from both academia and industry.

Duties

The post-doctoral fellow will work in a new project TRUEdig, which is an industrial collaboration project funded by the Knowledge Foundation of Sweden.

The post-doctoral fellow will in particular contribute to the TRUEdig sub-project 1 on Usable Privacy Technologies for Empowering Users in New Digital Services, which constructs and designs usable transparency and intervenability functions for empowering users.

The following research directions will be investigated:

- Design of usable ex ante and ex post transparency tools for explainability of automated decision making

- Develop of informed consent user interfaces and intervenability functions for mapping legal GDPR requirements

- Develop usable user interfaces for conveying trustworthy privacy preserving data analytics

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for the position, applicants are required to hold a recent PhD degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering (or equivalent qualifications). The candidate must have completed the degree no more than three years before the last date for applications, unless special ground exists.

Assessment criteria

In the assessment procedure, emphasis will be placed on the applicant's scientific experience in relation to usable privacy and usable PETs, including the development of usable and innovative user interfaces and tools for transparency, intervenability and consent. The candidate should be experienced with HCI research methods, including user interface development and prototyping, user lab studies, interviews, focus groups or statistical surveys. The candidate should preferably also be familiar with the European legal privacy framework (GDPR) and should also have the necessary technical knowledge of PETs with a focus on privacy-preserving data analytics techniques.

Publications in high impact journals and well-known conference proceedings, oral and written communication skills in English, the ability to independently pursue his or her work, and the ability to collaborate with others will be important as well.

Terms of employment

The position is a full-time position for one year with the possibility to extend for another year based on mutual agreement. The starting date for the position is within the time span of February 15, 2021 and May 15, 2021.
