The Department of Educational Studies (IPS) has approximately 120 members of staff and conducts research and education at undergraduate, master’s and doctoral level, as well as different collaboration projects. Focus is on learning and knowledge building in relation to social development within the framework of the academic subjects Educational Work, Special Education and Sports Science.

Special Education within the Department of Educational Studies

Special education looks at conditions for learning at individual, group and organisational level for persons with special needs. Central themes within special education research at the department relate to inclusion in practice and theory. The subject is oriented towards special education in and outside of school and other educational institutions. Education is offered at undergraduate and master’s level, through both courses and programmes. The subject is responsible for the Programme in Special Educational Needs and, as of autumn 2020, a master’s programme in special education as well.

Duties

The research environment of special education at Karlstad University is in an expansive phase. We are looking for senior lecturers with excellent skills in special education with focus on inclusive processes within various educational activities at individual, group and organisational level, who can help shape and develop the subject of special education at the department.

The position includes teaching, research and collaborative assignments. Duties consist mostly of teaching, supervision and examination at master’s level within the Programme in Special Educational Needs, the master’s programme, and courses in special education at undergraduate and master’s level. There may also be supervision at the doctoral level.

The position includes course coordination and educational development work. Teaching and examination in the subject within various teacher training programmes may also be included. Duties also include research, publication, active participation in the department’s research environments and seminar activities, as well as actively applying for external research funding together with others or as an individual researcher.

Qualification requirements

Applicants are eligible for the position as senior lecturer at the department who have obtained their Degree of Doctor or equivalent qualifications in a subject area with relevance to the content of the position. Equal weight will be placed on the applicant’s research and teaching skills. Applicants shall have a completed course in higher education pedagogy. As teaching will be held mostly in Swedish, and to some extent in English, the position also requires a high level of proficiency in both languages.

In special circumstances, the course in higher education pedagogy may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment (see the Higher Education Ordinance Chap. 4, Sect. 4).

Assessment criteria

Special weight will be placed on teaching skills and the ability to plan and develop courses at undergraduate and master’s level within the subject area. Postgraduate Diploma in Special Needs Training or other type of qualifications within the subject and professional experience will be of considerable weight. Weight will also be placed on other degrees in education, as well as production of study material within the subject area.

Considerable weight will be placed on documented research skills within the domain of the position, publications in academic journals and awarded research funding. When assessing candidates’ research skills, we will also consider the ability to communicate research findings with the surrounding community.

Documented experience of work at doctoral level as well as documented experience of managing and administering research and education are of weight.

Considerable weight will be placed on personal qualities such a good ability to work with others, create good relationships with colleagues and students, and the ability to take initiatives.

Terms of employment

The lectureship is a full-time permanent position, starting as soon as possible according to agreement. A probationary period of employment will be required.
