Description
Karlstad University offers programmes at doctoral level in 26 subjects – Business Administration at Karlstad Business School is one of them. Karlstad Business School has 130 employees and 2,800 students, divided between 18 programmes. The Department of Business Administration has seven professors and nine doctoral students, several of whom are connected to the multidisciplinary research unit CTF – the Service Research Center (www.ctf.kau.se). CTF is a world-leading research centre focusing on a number of areas related to service operations and management.

The doctoral studentships are offered in business administration within accounting, specifically financial accounting, auditing, management accounting and financing control.

Doctoral studies and duties
The doctoral programme consists of 240 ECTS credits, including a doctoral thesis. The doctoral student may also be appointed duties within the department, such as teaching, depending on the resources and needs of the department. The doctoral student is also expected to be involved in the daily work at the department.

Admission requirements and assessment criteria
Applicants to doctoral studies must meet the general admission requirements as well as the specific admission requirements and be judged to have the ability otherwise required to pursue the programme successfully.

General eligibility for admission requires a master’s degree of at least 240 ECTS credits of which at least 60 ECTS credits are studies at master’s level, or largely equivalent knowledge acquired in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Special eligibility for admission to doctoral studies in Business Administration requires completed courses totalling at least 240 ECTS credits of which at least 120 ECTS credits are studies in Business Administration. At least 30 ECTS credits of the studies at master’s level should be studies in Business Administration, including an independent project (degree project) of at least 15 ECTS credits.

Assessment is based on grades awarded at master’s level, with special weight placed on the academic quality of the independent project. Studies at master’s level with a specialisation in financial accounting, auditing, management accounting or financing control are of weight. Research experience within these specialisations are also of weight. In addition, assessment includes the applicant’s oral and written proficiency in Swedish and English and the letter of intent included in the application. Assessment also takes account of the university’s preference to appoint one doctoral student specialising in financial accounting/auditing and one doctoral student specialising in management accounting/financing control.

Admission
Admission is based on individual assessment of the applicant’s capacity to complete a programme at doctoral level successfully. Admission takes place provided that necessary decisions are made.

Terms of employment
Upon admission to doctoral studies, a doctoral studentship position will be offered (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 5, sect.3). The position comprises four years of full-time studies, or five years comprised of 80% studies and 20% teaching or other duties within the department. The position is a full-time, fixed-term employment (one year that can be extended by two years at the most at a time) with starting-date by agreement.

The salary for the doctoral studentship corresponds to the standard level of salary for doctoral students at Karlstad University.
