Description
The Faculty of Health, Science and Technology advertises a doctoral studentship in Nursing at the Department of Health Sciences. Research in this subject at Karlstad University involves the following three areas: Models and innovations for safe healthcare, Handling complex illnesses, and Expertise and professional development in healthcare. Research in the healthcare field is conducted in several subjects within both faculties at the University today, and the doctoral courses are brought together in the Graduate School Health. The doctoral studentship will be tied to the Graduate School of Health.

The vacancy is connected to a research project in patient safety. It is crucial that nursing is designed to ensure the patient’s basic needs and to prevent care injuries, such as pressure ulcers. Therefore, the project focuses on identifying the patient’s needs in a hospital environment, including the identification of risk and health-promoting factors and preventive measures. The nurse has a clear responsibility to identify patient needs and to plan and lead nursing initiatives. The goal of the project is to develop and implement interventions for good nursing to ensure patient safety and patient satisfaction.

A doctoral student is mainly expected to engage in doctoral studies. The doctoral programme consists of 240 ECTS credits, including the doctoral thesis. Departmental duties, such as teaching, or other tasks, may be allocated up till 20% of full-time.

Eligibility
For admission to doctoral studies, applicants must meet the requirements of both general and specific eligibility (Higher Education Ordinance, Ch. 7 sect. 35). General eligibility for admission requires a second-cycle qualification (MA) of at least 240 ECTS credits, including at least 60 ECTS credits at second-cycle (MA) level, or largely equivalent knowledge acquired in Sweden or abroad.
Specific eligibility requirements for doctoral studies in nursing include a second-cycle qualification (MA) in nursing, consisting of at least 120 ECTS credits of completed courses within the main subject of nursing, out of which at least 30 ECTS credits must be at second-cycle (MA) level and at least 15 ECTS credits must concern an independent project (degree project). The specific eligibility requirements are also fulfilled by those who have otherwise acquired largely equivalent knowledge as stated above, in Sweden or abroad.

Admission
Admission is based on individual assessment of the applicant’s capacity to complete a programme at doctoral level successfully (Higher Education Ordinance, Ch. 7 sect. 35).

Applicants are assessed and ranked on the basis of their previous studies, with special emphasis on the quality of their submitted independent research-related works, especially at the second-cycle (MA) level. In addition, the applicant’s merits and experiences (see below), research plan outlining the planned thesis project, language proficiency in Swedish and English, and willingness to be present and active in research contexts at Karlstad University, will be assessed. The applicant needs to exhibit social competence and the ability to work both independently and in a group.

Terms of employment
Upon admission to doctoral studies, a doctoral studentship position will be offered (Higher Education Ordinance, Ch. 5, sect.3). The position is a full-time, fixed-term employment (one year that can be extended by two years at the most at a time) with starting-date by agreement.
