The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Karlstad University, Sweden, has an opening for a permanent position as a senior lecturer in computer science with a specialization in cybersecurity.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science consists of the two research subjects: Mathematics and Computer Science, and has a research and teaching staff of more than 70 persons. In Computer Science, research and education are focused on cybersecurity and privacy, computer networking and distributed systems, and software engineering, and are conducted in close cooperation with international, national and regional partners from both academia and industry. Computer Science is currently developing a new Master Program in Networked Systems and Cybersecurity to further strengthen its focus areas and consolidate and develop its international position in education and research.

The senior lecturer will work as a member of the Privacy & Security group (PriSec), which currently focuses on different aspects of cybersecurity, such as network security, privacy-enhancing technologies and usable privacy & security. Research is mostly conducted in externally funded projects, e.g., currently international and national projects funded by EU H2020, the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research, the Knowledge Foundation of Sweden, and the Swedish Internet Foundation. The senior lecturer will play an important role in the further development of education in cybersecurity within the department. For this position, we are looking for a highly motivated candidate who has a strong research record in, or related to technical cybersecurity aspects as well as a strong teaching experience in cybersecurity or related areas.

Duties

The candidate is expected to contribute to the development of PriSec and the department by carrying out high-quality research, strengthening our international network and expanding our external funding through applications for grants at the national and international level. The candidate is also expected to be involved in teaching courses at both graduate and undergraduate levels. These courses especially focus on technical cybersecurity subjects, including courses related to network security and practical courses on ethical hacking/penetrating testing, and therefore we are looking primarily for candidates that can teach such courses. Further specialization courses could also cover privacy-enhancing technologies and usable privacy & security.Since our new Master’s program in Networked Systems and Cybersecurity is currently under active development, depending on the profile of the candidate, changes to the curriculum may be possible on the graduate level.

Educational activities also include supervision of PhD students, course administration and development, and supervision of thesis work at graduate and undergraduate levels. The successful candidate is expected to teach and supervise partly in Swedish within a couple of years.

Research is part of duties (50% of full time) for the first two years. After that the candidates are expected to successfully attract external research funding to continue researching at 50% of duties or possibly more, depending on how the department and research group develops.

In order to contribute to a fruitful working environment and the development of the department’s activities, you are expected to be based on site at the university and take part in the daily work.

Qualification requirements

Applicants are required to hold a PhD in Computer Science with a specialization in cybersecurity or related areas, or have corresponding qualifications, to be eligible for the position. The ability to teach cybersecurity and related computer science subjects at undergraduate and graduate levels is also required. Knowledge in ethical hacking/penetration testing is a plus.

According to Karlstad University’s appointments regulations, teachers need to have the personal qualities required for the position as well as a completed course in higher education pedagogy. Very good oral and written communication skills in English are required.

Assessment criteria

In the assessment procedure, equal emphasis will be placed on research and teaching skills. Special attention is given to well-documented pedagogical experience and skills, especially related to cybersecurity and related fields and the breadth of the teaching experience. Further emphasis will be put on well-documented research skills and his/her experience of applying for funding and to initiate and conduct national and international research projects in collaboration with other academic and industrial partners. Weight is given to academic or industrial research after having obtained their PhD degree.

Terms of employment

The position is full-time, permanent employment with starting date in spring 2021 or by agreement. A probationary period may be required.
