Karlstad University / Department of Health Sciences

Professor in Public Health Science

The subject of Public Health Science at Karlstad University is expanding, giving us an opportunity to advertise a professorship to further develop our successful research and teaching.

Description

Public Health Science belongs to the Department of Health Sciences within the Faculty of Health, Science and Technology. The subject’s research and teaching primarily focus on children’s life and health. There is an Environmental Health track, specialised in environmental factors early on in life and how they affect children’s health and development; a Community Medicine track focused on vulnerable children and domestic violence; and a Medical Science track concerning human physiology and pathology.

The subject’s renowned and experienced researchers generate a substantial academic output and comprise 1 professor, 4 associate professors, and 7 senior lecturers. In addition, the subject currently has 7 doctoral students. The Environmental Health research includes the SELMA study, which follows over 2,000 mothers-child pairs from the early stages of pregnancy through delivery and beyond. Focus is on environmental chemicals, lifestyle, and children’s health and development (http://www.selmastudien.se). The Community Medicine track includes ongoing studies about violence against children based on national mappings, inclusive pupil and parent survey studies, and studies about mental health in younger and older individuals with a focus on quality of life and life skills. The research conducted within Medical Science includes pharmaceutical use, epigenetics, and the role of macrophages in cancer and inflammation. Our research is conducted in close cooperation with top-tier national and international institutions where we connect our epidemiological studies to experimental toxicology in cellular and animal models, and particularly risk assessment. Funding comes from domestic research councils as well as their EU and US counterparts.

Our courses and study programmes share a natural interface with our research, a crucial factor in ensuring a disciplinary foundation for our teaching. Public Health Science constitutes a main field of study in degrees on a bachelor, master (60 and 120 ECTS credits), and doctoral level. The subject has offered the Master Programme in Health Science: Focus Public Health Science (VAMAS, 120 ECTS credits) since 2011. The autumn of 2021 will see the inauguration of the new Health, Environment and Society — Bachelor Programme in Public Health Science. This appointment is an opportunity to work in an educational environment with a distinct connection to the subject’s research. The new professor’s teaching and research skills in Public Health Science are therefore highly significant to the academic environment. Alongside the other subjects at the department, Public Health Science works to create a strong academic environment within the field of health. More information about the subject’s courses and programmes is available here: Public health science.
