Background

There is a great demand for qualified teachers today, which is likely to remain the same for several years to come. The Department of Educational Studies offers an exciting educational environment, specialising in teacher training.                                                                     

Currently, the department has approximately 115 members of staff, but we want to grow. We are involved in all the teacher training programmes at Karlstad University. We believe that teachers are a professional group with great prospects and that we, with our combined competence, can contribute to our teacher graduates entering the labour market and making a difference.

Duties  

Duties may include:

  • Teaching courses at first, second and third cycle level, both online and campus-based
  • Teaching as part of contract education
  • Course and programme co-ordination
  • Supervision at first, second and third cycle level
  • Acting as examiner at first and second cycle level
  • Contributing to a vibrant and active research environment and participating in the department’s research seminars
  • Actively taking part on the development work of the subject                                                                                 

Time for research and competence development is included in the position, equivalent to 20% of working hours. More research hours are possible if external funding is granted.

It is important that the candidate who is offered the position is based largely on site at Karlstad University.

Qualification requirements

Applicants are eligible for the position as senior lecturer at the department who have obtained their Degree of Doctor in pedagogy or other discipline with relevance to the content of the position and who have a completed course in higher education pedagogy or equivalent qualifications. In special circumstances, the course in higher education pedagogy may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment (see the Higher Education Ordinance Chap. 4, Sect. 4).

Equal weight will be placed on the applicant’s research and teaching skills. As teaching will be held mostly in Swedish, and to some extent in English, the position also requires a high level of proficiency in these languages.                                                                                

Assessment criteria

Special weight will be placed on:  

  • ability to execute teaching and development activities based on research and a well thought-out pedagogical approach. Teaching skills are assessed based on documented well-executed teaching activities and experience of planning, executing, evaluating and developing education at various levels, as well as any study material production and educational development work. Research skills are assessed based on width, depth, relevance, originality, independence and scope.
  • experience of teaching at university level.

Considerable weight will be placed on:                                                                     

  • experience of working/teaching in preschool, primary school and/or upper-secondary school.
  • research funding awarded in competition and collaboration with the surrounding community[IS1].
  • personal qualities such a good ability to work with others, create good relationships with colleagues and students, and the ability to take initiatives.

Weight will be placed on:  

  • teaching degree of relevance for the position.
  • experience of supervision/mentorship at first, second and/or third cycle level.
  • professional width, for example, through qualifications and interest in working within several of the department’s study programmes and activities.

Terms of employment

The lectureship is a full-time permanent position, starting as soon as possible according to agreement. A probationary period of employment may be required.

  • copies of relevant transcripts, employment certificates and degree certificates
  • a maximum of ten academic publications and a maximum of five works designed to convey knowledge, such as textbooks, educational software, or popular science articles
