Description

The Faculty of Health, Science and Technology is looking to appoint a senior lecturer in mathematics education to be stationed at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science has two third-cycle subject areas, mathematics and computer science. Mathematics is a third-cycle subject area with two main specialisations: mathematics and mathematics education. Within mathematics education there are currently four senior lecturers, of whom two are appointed readers, five lecturers, three doctoral students, one licentiate student, as well as a number of other researchers and teachers. Mathematics education is also part of the Centre of Science, Mathematics and Engineering Education Research, SMEER, which has approximately fifteen senior researchers and twelve research students. The research conducted within mathematics education at the department is mainly focused on learning and teaching using digital tools, teachers’ professional development, and mathematics education in preschools. Research is conducted largely in interdisciplinary groups within the university and through well-established collaborations with other universities. First-cycle courses within the field are primarily held as part of the teacher training programmes focusing on pre-primary, primary and secondary education. Duties

Duties include teaching, course development and course coordination [MO1], supervision of degree projects within the teacher training programmes, as well as research. Competence development is included in accordance with applicable local agreement.

The position also includes collaborating with others parts of the university and the surrounding community. It is therefore important that the applicant has a good ability to work as part of a teacher team and other types of groups.

In order to contribute to a fruitful working environment and the development of the department’s activities, you are expected to be based on site at the university and take part in the daily work.

Qualification requirements

Applicants are eligible for the position as senior lecturer at the department who have documented teaching skills and have obtained their Degree of Doctor or equivalent qualifications with relevance to the content and duties of the position (the Higher Education Ordinance Chap. 4, Sect. 3). Weight is placed on completed and approved teacher training with a specialisation in mathematics.

According to Karlstad University’s appointments procedure, teachers need to have the personal qualities required for the position as well as a completed course in higher education pedagogy. In special circumstances, the course in higher education pedagogy may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment. Assessment criteria

Equal weight will be placed on the applicant’s teaching and research skills.

Special weight will be placed on:

good research qualifications and documented ability to successfully apply for external research funding, both national and internationally, documented experience of teaching in mathematics and mathematics education in teacher training, documented teaching skills, high level of proficiency in Swedish.

Considerable weight will be placed on:

documented experience of teaching and development work in mathematics in primary and/or secondary school, the applicant’s personal qualities, such as ability to cooperate, commitment, ability to create good relationships with colleagues and students, as well as ability to take initiatives, driver’s licence.

Terms of employment

The lectureship is a full-time permanent position, starting as soon as possible.

  • course certificate in higher education pedagogy, or account of equivalent qualifications
  • account of other work experience
  • account of experience of leadership, co-operation and administration

  • copies of relevant transcripts, employment certificates and degree certificates
  • a maximum of ten academic publications and a maximum of five works designed to convey knowledge, such as textbooks, educational software, or popular science articles
