Description

The Faculty of Health, Science and Technology has an opening at the Department of Environmental and Life Sciences for two project assistants research in biology, emphasis fish behavior. The project involves research on fish ecology in regulated streams with a special focus on fish behavior during passage through dams.

The research environment River Ecology and Management Research Group (NRRV) in biology at the Department of Environmental and Life Sciences, Karlstad University, pursues basic as well as applied research of rivers, lakes and surrounding landscapes (www.kau.se/biologi; www.nrrv.se ). The group’s research deals with streams and rivers as natural resources, with a view to finding solutions to environmental problems that benefit both society and nature. Research includes river connectivity and the effects of hydropower, aquatic-terrestrial habitats and linkages, winter ecology under global climate change, endangered species, conservation biology, and social-ecological research relating to river regulation and fisheries. Many research topics are conducted in collaboration with stakeholders from industry, administrative agencies, interest organizations and landowners as well as with the group’s extensive international research network.

Duties

Duties involve fish experiments, data analysis and compilation of data from fish behavioral experiments. The project assistants are expected to assist when conducting experiments, and to extract data from already collected and stored films.

Qualification requirements

Eligibility requires good knowledge of biology, especially of ecology in regulated streams, fish experiments in flumes, and analyzing filmed fish behavior and the ability to use software for analyzing films. In addition, 90 higher education credits in biology are required and the applicant is expected to have a good command of both English and Swedish. A driver’s license is required. The assistants must be able to travel within Sweden and live/stay for extended periods of time (c. 3-5 weeks) at a research facility. During this time, the assistant will expected to work long hours on occasion and possibly overnight.

We are seeking a motivated person with documented experience in the fields of fish and river ecology. Valuable qualifications are a good knowledge of experimental design, fish behavioral sampling in artificial streams and extracting behavioral data from films. We highly value interpersonal qualities such as good collaborative skills, carefulness and commitment to the project, and the assistant’s ability to integrate rapidly into the project team.

Terms of employment

The position is a fixed-term employment 80% for 4 months, with possible extension. The starting date is 15 September 2020 or by agreement. Duties require some travelling.
