Background

The Faculty of Health, Science and Technology advertises a doctoral studentship in Nursing at the Department of Health Sciences. Research in this subject at Karlstad University involves the following three areas: Models and innovations for safe healthcare, Handling complex illnesses, and Expertise and professional development in healthcare. Research in the healthcare field is conducted in several subjects within both faculties at the University today, and the doctoral courses are brought together in the Graduate School Health. The doctoral studentship in nursing will be linked to the Graduate School of Health.

Duties

The doctoral student should primary dedicate their time to their own third-cycle studies. The third-cycle programme consists of 240 ECTS credits, including the thesis. The doctoral student may also be appointed duties within the department, such as teaching or other tasks at the university, of maximum 20 percent of full-time.

There is now a vacancy within the research programme in nursing and the research project “FUndaMEntals of Care Models” (FUME). The project will be developed and designed within the framework of the Medical Research Council Framework. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with our Norwegian colleagues at Lovisenberg Diaconal University College (LDH) in Oslo. Within the framework of FUME, an additional doctoral studentship in nursing will be announced at LDH and be linked to the Graduate School of Health at Karlstad University.

The overall aim of the project is to develop, test and implement patient-centred models for nurses with focus on fundamental care for elderly people living in their own home with the support of municipal home health nursing and home care and/or in special housing. Research indicates that in today’s organisation of the more and more technological and complex healthcare sector, the nurse’s function tends to move further and further away from patient-centred nursing. A number of factors, such as so-called “task shifting” and an increase in administrative tasks that are not always related to direct patient care, are described as reasons behind this shift. Research also shows that a reduced number of certified nurses in patient-centred work tends to relate to whether care and nursing are rationed (“rationed care and/or missed care”) and to failure to rescue and/or prevent the development of life-threatening complications with patients. However, there is a lack of studies describing how this research reflects the nurses’ function in the context home health nursing and/or special housing or the fundamental nursing that elderly people receive in these contexts.

Qualification requirements

For admission to doctoral studies, applicants must meet the requirements of both general and specific eligibility (the Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 7 sect. 35). General eligibility for admission requires a second-cycle qualification (MA) of at least 240 ECTS credits, including at least 60 ECTS credits at second- cycle (MA) level, or largely equivalent knowledge acquired in Sweden or abroad. Specific eligibility requirements for doctoral studies in nursing include a second-cycle qualification in nursing and completed courses in the subject/main field of nursing of at least 120 ECTS credits, of which at least 30 ECTS credits at second-cycle level, including an independent project (degree project) of at least 15 ECTS credits. Specific eligibility is also granted applicants who have acquired equivalent qualifications in a different order in Sweden or abroad.

Admission and assessment criteria

Admission is based on individual assessment of the applicant’s capacity to complete a programme at doctoral level successfully (the Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 7 sect. 35).

Applicants are assessed and ranked on the basis of their previous studies, with special emphasis on the quality of their submitted independent research-related works, especially at the second-cycle level. In addition, applicants will be assessed based on their submitted merits and experiences (see below), research proposal or a detailed plan outlining a systematic literature study. The ability to express yourself well in spoken Swedish and English is of considerable weight. Good writing skills in both languages is of weight.

Personal qualities such the ability to show commitment and responsibility, as well as the ability to manage and complete parts of, and entire, projects within a set timeline. The applicant needs to exhibit social competence and the ability to work both independently and in a group.
