Department of Health Sciences

The Department of Health Sciences is part of the Faculty of Health, Science and Technology and comprises the disciplines Nursing, Oral Health, Public Health Science and Medical Science.

The discipline of nursing offers study programmes in nursing and specialist nursing (prehospital nursing, intensive care, theatre care and district nurse), as well as freestanding courses, contract education and research programmes. Nursing is the main field of study in a Degree of Bachelor and Degree of Master (60 ECTS credits and 120 ECTS credits), and part of a Degree of Doctor.

Research at the department is gathered within the research programme Promoting health and the quality of care. The programme includes three research areas that partly overlap: Models and innovations for safe healthcare, Handling complex illnesses and Expertise and professional development in healthcare. We are looking for a senior lecturer in nursing to be based at Karlstad University and Region Värmland.

Description

The position as senior lecturer in nursing includes close cooperation between Karlstad University and Region Värmland. You will have a full-time employment contract with Karlstad University, however, during the first four years the position will include a part-time placement with Region Värmland, after which you will be based at Karlstad University only. The purpose of the collaboration is to develop and deepen clinical research in nursing, enhance the educational quality of placements, and being clinically active within Region Värmland. Working hours are divided accordingly: 40% clinical research, 30% clinical work and 30% teaching.

Duties

Duties include integrating clinical research, clinical work and placements, as well as being involved in teaching. The assignment in clinical research includes networking and organising seminars between academia and clinical professionals, applying for external research funding, assisting in drawing up R&D plans, deepening and broadening research competence among staff, and conducting clinical research and development of medical care services. In terms of education, you are expected to develop and be responsible for educational quality (in relation to placements together with Region Värmland), teach and supervise staff and students, engage in interprofessional collaborations with various courses and programmes for the development of joint student activities, as well as holding lectures, acting as examiner and supervising degree projects. As part of the clinical assignment, you will meet with patients based on specific expertise and the needs of the organisation, as well as being part of a management team and participating in discussions on research, education and development at an overall level.

Qualification requirements

Applicants are eligible for the position as senior lecturer at Karlstad University who have obtained their Degree of Doctor or equivalent research competence in a subject with relevance for the position and documented teaching expertise. Alternatively, equivalent research competence or other professional skills of importance in relation to the subject content of the position and the duties included in the position. The position as clinical senior lecturer in nursing also requires applicants to be a registered nurse or specialist nurse with good clinical experience. In addition, the position requires high proficiency in Swedish to be able to communicate objectively with patients and ensure safe care.

It is also required that the applicant has a completed course in higher education pedagogy or equivalent qualifications. In special circumstances, the course in higher education pedagogy may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment. Assessment criteria

Equal weight is given to the applicant’s research, teaching and clinical competence and skills. Teaching expertise is assessed based on the ability to plan, implement and evaluate their teaching, as well as the ability to supervise and assess. Research expertise is assessed based on scientific quality and the scope and depth of the research. Clinical competence is assessed based on documented experience and skills of relevance for the operations in relation to the applicant’s clinical placement of choice. Considerable weight is given to personal qualities such as the ability to work in a team, create good relationships with colleagues, patients and students, and the ability to take initiative and show commitment. Weight is given to experience in project management or as head of research. Weight is also given to research funding awarded in competition. Finally, we value good administrative skills, a good ability to explain and present research and development work as well as a good ability to work together with colleagues and the surrounding community.

Terms of employment

The lectureship is a full-time permanent position, starting as soon as possible according to agreement. The first four years include a placement at Region Värmland, equivalent to 30% of clinical work.

A probationary period of employment may be required.

Other

After four years as a clinical senior lecturer with part-time placement at Region Värmland, the position will turn into a full-time position as senior lecturer in nursing at Karlstad University.

The responsible head at Karlstad University conducts annual appraisals and has the overall responsibility for the employee. Annual follow-ups on how the assignment is progressing will be conducted together with the head of R&D and the operations manager of Region Värmland and the responsible head at Karlstad University.

 - valid professional status qualification

 - account and certificate of clinical experience

 - contact details of at least two references, including at least one previous manager/head
