The Department of Social and Psychological Studies advertises a doctoral studentship in Sociology with a specialisation in applied gender research.

Description

Around 20 people work in the subject Sociology, which offers education in sociology and sociological social psychology at the first, second, and third cycle levels and is responsible for a social science degree programme called the Social Analysis Programme. Sociology, which has around 450 students, participates in several research projects and is also part of a number of national and international collaborations.

A large share of ongoing research in Sociology at Karlstad University concerns three main fields of study: everyday and personal life, critical age studies, and resistance studies. An intersectional approach is often used.

Gender research at Karlstad University is based primarily in the Centre for Gender Studies (CGF). CGF conducts research in the following fields of study: masculinity studies; transgender studies; applied gender research; and gender, health, and technology. All of these areas of research are characterised by a broad theoretical basis and a combination of basic research and applied research. The subject Gender Studies offers freestanding courses at the first and second cycle levels.

The subject Sociology, together with the subject Gender Studies and the Centre for Gender Studies, is part of a multi-subject department which also includes Social Work and Psychology.

Eligibility and assessment

For admission to doctoral studies, applicants must meet the requirements of both general and specific eligibility and be assessed as generally capable of completing the study programme (Higher Education Ordinance, Ch. 7)

General eligibility for admission requires a second-cycle qualification of at least 240 ECTS credits, including at least 60 ECTS credits at second-cycle level, or largely equivalent knowledge acquired in Sweden or abroad. The Faculty Board may grant an individual applicant an exception from general eligibility requirements if there are special reasons (Higher Education Ordinance, Ch. 7).

Specific eligibility for admission to doctoral studies in Sociology requires completed courses in Sociology of at least 120 ECTS credits, including at least 30 ECTS credits at second-cycle level, of which at least 15 ECTS credits should include an independent project (degree project). Specific eligibility also includes largely equivalent knowledge acquired otherwise in Sweden or abroad.

Special emphasis is placed on the quality of previous independent written research-related and investigative work. Special emphasis is also placed on previous experience of gender implementation in both the private and public sector as well as within the higher education sector.

Considerable emphasis is placed on the content and design of the research plan outlining the planned thesis project and how it relates to the specialisation in gender research and especially in relation to applied gender research. Considerable emphasis is also placed on the applicant’s intention to be

present and active in the research environment. Some emphasis is placed on social skills, independence, and the ability to work both autonomously and in a group.

Proficiency in both Swedish and English is required.

Admission

Admission is based on individual assessment of the applicant’s capacity to complete a programme at doctoral level successfully.
