Description

Ingesund School of Music (MHI) is part of the Department of Artistic Studies at Karlstad University, located in Arvika.  MHI is a renowned school of music and popular among aspiring musicians. Music teaching degrees are awarded for secondary education and extra-mural arts and music schools. 

MHI and Karlstad University also award Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in Music. The Fine Arts/Music Programme started in 2016 and the Music Production Programme in 2018.  The ambition is to create a centre for research on aesthetic forms of expression at MHI.

Music pedagogy is an interdisciplinary subject area comprising all forms of knowledge development and learning of music including various social, cultural and practical dimensions of learning.  The subject area has a bearing on education and teaching and constitutes an important foundation for the current programmes of study offered at Ingesund School of Music (MHI).

Duties

Duties primarily include teaching courses in music pedagogy but also teacher education core courses, as well as supervising and examining degree projects, course development and research.  In the first year of employment, 30 per cent of full time (60 per cent) is allocated to research.  Duties include active participation in advancing pedagogical and subject-specific education research in the faculty and external cooperation.  

Workplace location is at the Ingesund School of Music in Arvika.

Qualification requirements

The requirements for this senior lectureship are a doctorate in music pedagogy or equivalent research qualifications or other professional expertise of relevance to the duties and content of the position, and demonstrated teaching expertise or equivalent qualifications, and completed course in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. In special circumstances, this course may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment.

In the ranking of candidates, equal weight is given to teaching expertise and to research expertise.

Assessment criteria

Special weight is given to demonstrated teaching and research expertise in the area of music pedagogy and music education. Special weight is given to experience of teaching in upper secondary education and extramural arts and music schools, especially regarding instrumental and ensemble instruction. Special weight is also given to a degree in music education. Considerable weight is given to experience in teaching music pedagogy at higher education  level and to experience of supervising and examining degree projects. Considerable weight is given to organisational ability to plan and manage different tasks with flexibility, responsibility and power of initiative.

Weight is given to ability to disseminate information on research and development projects, to experience of applying for external research funding and experience of entrance test panel service, expert appointment, examination and participation in national/international research networks.  

Weight is given to ability to cooperate with colleagues and external communities.

The language of instruction is primarily Swedish and good command of Swedish and English is required.

Terms of employment

This is a part time non-fixed term employment ( 60%) with starting date at the earliest convenience. A probationary period may be used.
