Current research in Political Science at Karlstad University is focused on three main areas of study – governance of the public sector, including studies of artificial intelligence and democracy; critical policy studies with a focus on gender equality, environmental policy, safety and risk; and European studies. In addition, there are two emerging fields of research: international relations with a focus on the Middle East, and election studies. Overall, classical questions within Political Science, like democratic theory and political theory, are of large interest among the scholars in the discipline.
We are looking for a doctoral student in Political Science with capacity to develop an independent research project related to one of the research areas in the discipline.
For admission to doctoral studies, applicants must meet the requirements of both general and specific eligibility and be assessed as generally capable of completing the study programme (Higher Education Ordinance, Ch. 7, sect. 35).
General eligibility for admission requires a second-cycle qualification and completed courses of at least 240 ECTS credits, including at least 60 ECTS credits at second-cycle level, or largely equivalent knowledge acquired in Sweden or abroad. The University may grant an individual applicant an exception from general eligibility requirements if there are special reasons (Higher Education Ordinance, Ch. 7, sect. 39).
Specific eligibility for admission to doctoral studies in Political Science requires completed courses in the subject/main field of study Political Science of at least 120 ECTS credits, including at least 30 ECTS credits at second-cycle level and an independent project (degree project) equivalent to at least 15 ECTS credits, or largely equivalent knowledge acquired otherwise in Sweden or abroad, for instance through relevant cross-disciplinary studies.
Admission is based on individual assessment of the applicant’s capacity to complete studies at the doctoral level successfully. Special emphasis is placed on previous study results and the quality of previous independent written research-related and investigative work, especially at the second-cycle level. Applicants must have good social skills and the ability to work both independently and in a group. A Degree of Master in Political Science or other relevant social science subject is a valuable qualification. We value initiative and independence highly.
