The Department of Social and Psychological Studies advertises a doctoral studentship in Sociology with a specialisation in gender research.
Around 20 people work in the subject Sociology, which offers education in sociology and sociological social psychology at the first, second, and third cycle levels and is responsible for a social science degree programme called the Social Analysis Programme. Sociology, which has around 450 students, participates in several research projects and is also part of a number of national and international collaborations.
A large share of ongoing research in Sociology at Karlstad University concerns three main fields of study: everyday and personal life, critical age studies, and resistance studies. An intersectional approach is often used.
Gender research at Karlstad University is based primarily in the Centre for Gender Studies (CGF). CGF conducts research in the following fields of study: masculinity studies; transgender studies; applied gender research; and genus, health, and technology. All of these areas of research are characterised by a broad theoretical basis and a combination of basic research and applied research. The subject Gender Studies offers freestanding courses at the first and second cycle levels.
The subject Sociology, together with the subject Gender Studies and the Centre for Gender Studies, is part of a multi-subject department which also includes Social Work and Psychology.
The doctoral studentship involves four years of full-time study and leads up to a doctoral degree. Doctoral students work independently and are also expected to contribute to the work of the subject in different ways. The position may include 20% of other teaching-related, research-related, or administrative tasks at the department, in which case the studentship will be extended correspondingly. The doctoral student is expected to be based at Karlstad University and contribute to the research environment of the subject.
