The Department of Educational Studies advertises a doctoral studentship. The focus of the doctoral programme will be aligned with ongoing research in the department. The departmental website includes several links where you can read more about our researchers and our research: https://www.kau.se/en/faculty-arts-and-social-sciences/about-faculty/departments-and-disciplines/department-educational
The doctoral studentship involves four years of full-time study and leads up to a doctoral degree. Applicants who have already completed a licentiate degree in the area of study can be given credit for two years of full-time study, which means that the doctoral study programme will comprise two years of full-time study. If the doctoral studentship includes 20% of other teaching-related or administrative tasks at the department, the position may last for five years.
The doctoral student is expected to be based at Karlstad University and contribute to the study environment of the doctoral programme as well as relevant research environments in Educational Work.
For admission to doctoral studies, applicants must meet the requirements of both general and specific eligibility and be assessed as generally capable of completing the study programme (Higher Education Ordinance, Ch. 7 sect. 35).
General eligibility for admission requires a second-cycle qualification of at least 240 ECTS credits, including at least 60 ECTS credits at second-cycle level, or largely equivalent knowledge acquired in Sweden or abroad.
A specific eligibility requirement for doctoral studies in Educational Work is a Bachelor of Arts in Education, or largely equivalent knowledge acquired otherwise, in Sweden or abroad.
Admission is based on individual assessment of the applicant’s qualifications, including among other things study results, with special emphasis on the quality of submitted independent research-related work, and the applicant’s capacity to complete a programme at doctoral level successfully (Higher Education Ordinance, Ch. 7 sect. 35). This is why a research plan (approximately 5 pages) outlining the planned thesis project and how it relates to one of the relevant areas of study and research must be included in the application. The research plan will be evaluated both in terms of quality and in terms of relevance for the research domain in question.
Previous experience of research in relevant areas and good oral and written proficiency in both Swedish and English are useful qualifications.
The doctoral studentship in Educational Work involves collaboration in existing research environments and research projects. For this reason, the applicant needs to exhibit the ability to work both independently and in a group.
