Background
The Faculty of Health Science and Technology has an opening for one full-time post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Engineering and Physics in the novel field of additive manufacturing. The post-doc is dedicated to studies in advanced alloys manufactured by selective laser melting (SLM). Areas of research that will be addressed are manufacturing, material printability, manufacturability issues, problems of microstructure of as-built material and characterization of properties and performance of the final material.

The research project is a part of “AT-LAB – regional additive laboratory at Karlstad University” project co-funded by the European Union via Regional Development Fund, Region Värmland and Karlstad University running at Karlstad University. This post-doctoral position is part of the strategy to develop the group, focusing on one of the core interests of the research group, and includes collaboration with group members.

Duties
Additive manufacturing is a new technology providing unique opportunities to design and sustainable manufacturing of components. Performance of the final product, nevertheless, is under consideration, as properties and performance of additive manufactured materials is not well established. This advertised postdoc position implies manufacturing, characterization and testing of advanced materials manufactured by selective laser melting to establish microstructure-properties relationships.

The postdoc researcher will work independently in the manufacturing and preparation laboratory, utilize scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) facilities, conduct mechanical tests (tensile, bending, fatigue), to contribute in knowledge dissemination, conferences and publish scientific articles.

Up to 20% working time can be used for teaching tasks upon an agreement with the project leader and Head of the Department.

Qualification requirements
Eligible for the position are those applicants who have obtained their PhD in materials science and/or materials engineering, or achieved equivalent qualifications abroad, at the most three years prior to the end of the application period. If there are special reasons, the required qualifications may have been obtained earlier.

The position includes publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international conferences. Therefore, exellent skills in scientific writing and presentations in English are obligatory.

Assessment criteria
We are searching for a highly motivated candidate with experience in the fields of additive manufacturing, advanced materials characterization methods, and mechanical testing. Previous knowledge and skills in additive manufacturing technology – development of process parameters, process monitoring, sensors, and in advanced characterization of additively manufactured metallic materials by SEM and TEM, are advantageous.

Karlstad University values personal qualities such as the ability to cooperate and establish good relations with colleagues, as well as the ability to work independently and to take initiatives.

Terms
The position is a fixed-term, full time position for 24 months. The starting date is as soon as possible.

Applicants are responsible for submitting a complete application in accordance with the advertisement and for ensuring that the documentation allows for objective and qualitative assessments. A complete application should be submitted no later than the application deadline.

The application should include:

  • Application letter briefly describing the applicant’s qualifications and research interests in relation to the duties of the position
  • Detailed list of qualifications/CV
