Background
Since the autumn of 2017, the seventh complete law programme in Sweden has been offered at Karlstad University. The programme provides foundation courses in law and specialisations in tax law, commercial law, criminal law, procedural law as well as laws relating to human rights and obligations. Graduates have eligibility for service as law clerk.  In addition, courses are offered to programme students in business and economics, real estate management, human resource and working life, politics and economics, and social work. Presently, there are around twenty staff members, including six professors, one associate professor, four senior lecturers, one lecturer and six doctoral students.  Concurrent with programme expansions, Karlstad University’s Business School has also invested in developing the doctoral studies programme launched in December 2014 with eight specialisation areas: general jurisprudence, civil law, financial law, international law, environmental law, public law, procedural law and criminal law. Recruitment is planned for several central legal areas and sub disciplines and now we are seeking a senior lecturer in central civil law.

Duties
The position as a senior lecturer in civil law involves teaching courses in central civil law such as commercial contract law, purchase laws and the law of obligations, as well as in other related areas if required. Duties includes planning, implementing and evaluating teaching of law programme courses and other courses at undergraduate and master levels (above all related to the specialisation in commercial law), as well as supervising essays and degree projects. We are seeking a senior lecturer who is a good teacher and willing to actively partake in our development of the law programme at undergraduate and master levels, as well as in the doctoral programmes, offered in conjunction with other universities. Appointment as senior lecturer includes research time (20 percent of full-time). We also expect active participation in applying for external research funding and in advancing our external contacts – we would welcome a development and strengthening of research in the areas of civil law and commercial law. Participation in daily departmental activities is also expected, as far as possible.

Qualification requirements
Eligibility for this senior lecturer position requires  a Doctor of Laws Degree in civil law  or corresponding research expertise as well as teaching expertise and completed course in higher education pedagogy or equivalent qualifications. In certain circumstances, the latter course may be completed as part of the professional development commitment within two years of employment. Applicants are required to have demonstrated good teaching skills at undergraduate and master levels (or equivalent) and have experience of research in the areas of civil law and/or commercial law.

For more information of qualification requirements, see Higher Education Ordinance Ch.4 and Regulations for the Appointment and Promotion of Teaching Staff.

Assessment criteria
In the ranking of candidates special and equal weight is given to research and teaching expertise.  In assessing research expertise special weight is given to research related to the areas of civil law and commercial law and expertise that can contribute to research in these areas.  In assessing teaching expertise, special weight is given to ability to plan, implement and evaluate teaching at different university levels and ability to supervise and examine. The language of instruction is Swedish and special weight is given to good oral and written skills in Swedish, as well as to very good qualifications in the civil law area.  Weight is given to knowledge of labour law.  Considerable weight is given to ability to build academic and non-academic national and international contacts, and to attract external research funding. Considerable weight is also given to personal qualities such as cooperation skills, power of initiative, and commitment to duties. Administrative experience is also considered.

Experience of supervising doctoral students is a valuable qualification. Based on a qualitative overall assessment of expertise and skills, the position will be offered to the candidate that is deemed to have the best qualifications to implement and develop the specified duties and contribute to a favourable development of the discipline of law.

Karlstad University strives for equal distribution of gender. In case of equal qualifications, priority is given to the underrepresented sex.
