Description
The Faculty of Health, Science and Technology has an opening for a project assistant in biology,
emphasis in ecology, at the Department of Environmental and Life Sciences. The project involves research on ecology in streams with a focus on habitat modelling and river flows. The River Ecology and Management Research Group (NRRV), a research group within the Department of Environmental and Life Sciences at Karlstad University, conducts both basic and applied research in rivers, lakes and the surrounding landscape (www.kau.se/biologi; www.nrrv.se ). The research centres on the sustainable use of natural resources in watersheds with a view to finding solutions to environmental problems that benefit both society and nature. Areas of research addressed by the research group include river connectivity and the effects of hydropower, aquatic-terrestrial habitats and linkages, winter ecology under global climate change, endangered species, conservation biology, and social-ecological research relating to river regulation and fisheries. Many research topics are conducted in collaboration with stakeholders from industry, administrative agencies, interest organizations and landowners as well as with the group’s extensive international research network. NRRV was recently selected as a ‘Strong Research Environment’ by Karlstad University, and has received directed funding to further develop its research profile.
Duties
Duties involve field work, laboratory work and data analysis with a main focus on Individual Based Modelling (IBMs). The project assistant contributes to report writing and other publications. The project leader may also need assistance with administrative tasks, as well as planning and conducting conferences and workshops.
Qualifications
Applicants who have good knowledge of ecology and related disciplines as well as documented experience using Individual Based Modelling and competence to use different software for programming, GIS, hydraulic modelling and similar are eligible for the position. In addition a Master degree in biology and good command of Swedish and English are requirements.
We are seeking a motivated person with experience in the fields of fish and river ecology, river rehabilitation, and computer analysis of data including Individual Based Modelling, programming software, GIS, and hydraulic modelling. Valuable qualifications are an interest in the areas of stream fish ecology and macrozoobenthos. We highly value interpersonal skills facilitating rapid integration in the research team.
Terms of employment
The position is a fixed-term employment 50-100% for six months, with possible extension. The starting date is 1 February 2020 [JP1] or by agreement. Duties may require some travelling and field work.
