Description

We offer courses in Sociology and Sociology focused on Social Psychology at bachelor, master and doctoral levels. The subject Sociology is also responsible for the bachelor programme in Social Analysis. The subject comprises around 20 members of staff who do research, teach and cooperate with external parties. We participate in a number of research projects and have around 450 students. The subject is involved in various national and international partnerships.

Research in Sociology focuses on emotions and personal lives, age, gender structures, organisations, small businesses, etc., and often takes intersectional approaches. We are open to the idea of broadening and developing the scope of the subject’s research through new research areas. We further want to strengthen our research on power structures and intersectionality.

The subject forms part of a multidisciplinary department that also includes Social Work, Psychology and Gender Studies.

Duties

Main duties involve teaching Sociology and Social Psychology at bachelor and master levels as part of our courses and programme. Additional duties include supervision, examination, course coordination and course development, as well as active participation in the daily activities and development work done by the subject, department and faculty in the areas of teaching, research and community cooperation. The successful applicant is expected to participate in the subject’s research, embark on own research projects and contribute to securing external funding. At least 20% of the position is expected to be devoted to teaching at bachelor and master levels. Supervision and teaching at doctoral level may also be included. Duties may further include teaching as part of other programmes such as the Social Work programme, the Psychology programme and teacher training programmes.

Qualification requirements

A PhD or equivalent academic qualification in Sociology is required, as are documented teaching expertise and a completed course in higher education pedagogy, or equivalent. Under special circumstances, this course may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment. Other qualification requirements can be found in Ch. 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and Karlstad University’s regulations for the appointment and promotion of teaching staff.

Assessment criteria

Special weight is given to teaching and research expertise in Sociology. Equal weight is given to research and teaching expertise when evaluating applications.

Considerable weight is given to social skills such as the ability to cooperate, build good relationships with colleagues, take initiative and show enthusiasm for the work done by others. Considerable weight is further given to spoken and written communication skills in Swedish and English.

Weight is given to good administrative skills, ability to communicate research and development work, and ability to cooperate with the community.

Weight is further given to research experience using both qualitative and quantitative approaches.

Terms of employment

This is a full-time, non-fixed-term position with starting date at the earliest convenience or as per agreement. In order to promote cooperation and a good work environment, the successful applicant is expected to be present at the department at Karlstad University as much as possible. A probationary period may be required.
