Description

At Karlstad University, English is offered at bachelor, master and doctoral levels. Our offering includes courses on all primary and secondary teacher training programmes, subject courses, as well as English for specific purposes. Research is conducted in both linguistics and literature, through participation in the designated strong Research Group for Culture Studies (KuFo) and the Centre for Language and Literature Education (CSL), affiliated to the strong Research on Subject-Specific Education (ROSE) group.

Doctoral studentship

A position as doctoral student comprises four years’ full-time studies and concludes with the award of a doctoral degree. A doctoral student works independently and is prepared to contribute to the department’s development work, and participate in teaching and administration. The successful applicant is expected to be based at Karlstad University and contribute actively to the departmental research environment and to KuFo.

Eligibility

General as well as specific entry requirements, determined by the university, have to be met for admittance to doctoral-level studies, and the applicant must be considered to have the capacity to complete a programme at the doctoral level successfully (Higher Education Ordinance, Ch. 7, Sec. 35). General entry requirements are fulfilled by a person who has earned a master’s degree and at least 240 ECTS credits of which at least 60 credits are studies at master’s level, or who in some other way in Sweden or abroad has acquired largely equivalent knowledge.

Specific entry requirements to the doctoral programme in English with specialisation in literature are fulfilled by a person who has earned at least 30 ECTS credits in English at master’s level, of which at least 15 ECTS credits must comprise an independent project.

Admission

Selection is based on individual assessment of the applicants’ qualifications and capacity to complete a programme at the doctoral level successfully. Selection is specifically based on applicants’ earlier study results and special weight is given to the quality of independent written degree projects completed as part of their earlier studies. In addition, the research proposal, in which applicants describe their thesis projects, language proficiency and the applicant’s intention to be in Karlstad and participate in the research environment are assessed. The successful applicant should have good social skills and should be able to work individually as well as in teams. At present, most doctoral students in English are men, and we therefore particularly encourage female applicants.

Terms of employment

A doctoral student position comprises four years’ full-time studies, or 5 years’ study at 80% of full-time if 20% is devoted to teaching or other departmental duties. Pay is set according to the doctoral student pay scale determined by Karlstad University.

The starting date is on 15 August 2019, or as per agreement.
