Description

The Faculty of Health Science and Technology has an opening for an associate senior lecturer at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science in Computer Science with a specialization in usable privacy and security.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science consists of the two research subjects: Mathematics and Computer Science. It has a research and teaching staff of more than 60 persons. In Computer Science, research and education are focused on computer networking and distributed systems, computer security and privacy, and software engineering, and are conducted in close cooperation with international, national and regional partners from both academia and industry.

Duties

The position is connected to the PriSec (Privacy and Security) research group within Computer Science. The main duty involved is research within the field of usable privacy and security, privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs), and privacy and cyber security education.  In particular, the selected person should contribute as a usability researcher and work package leader to related research projects including the EU H2020 project CyberSec4Europe.

Duties also involve contributing to the development of the research group by carrying out high-quality research, strengthening its international network and expanding its external funding through applications for grants at the national and international level.  Duties also include research administration, teaching in computer security and related subjects, course administration and development, course coordination, and supervision of thesis work at graduate and undergraduate levels.

The successful candidate is expected to teach and supervise, partly in Swedish within a couple of years. Karlstad University will supply adequate training to make this possible. The position also includes interaction with other university departments  as well as with the community and therefore the ability to collaborate with other groups is important.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for the position, applicants are required to hold a doctoral degree in Computer Science and have a specialization in usable privacy and security, PETs, and/or privacy and cyber security education, or have corresponding qualifications. The candidate must have completed the degree no more than seven years before the due date for application, unless there are special circumstances.

Knowledge, or experience, in the areas of human computer interaction (HCI) related to usable security and privacy is especially desirable. In particular, we value experience in the field of design and implementation of usable user interfaces and in conducting user studies and statistical analysis on data, as well as basic understanding of psychological usability aspects. Knowledge and experience within the areas of information security, and PETs are also required.

The ability to teach computer security at undergraduate and master levels and software development at undergraduate level is a further requirement. Good oral and written communication skills in English are required.

Assessment grounds

In the ranking of candidates, more weight will be given to research expertise than to teaching expertise. Special attention will be given to the quality of research, and to past experience with externally funded research projects involving industrial collaboration.

Karlstad University values personal qualities such as the ability to cooperate and establish good relations with colleagues and students as well as the ability to work independently and to take initiatives.

For other qualification requirements, see Ch. 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance, as well as Karlstad University’s regulations for the appointment and promotion of teaching staff.

Additional information

The position is full-time fixed-term employment of four years with starting-date at the earliest convenience. The appointment as associate senior lecturer is a qualifying position and may lead to appointment as senior lecturer on request. Promotion to senior lecturer requires completed course in higher education pedagogy or equivalent qualifications. Documented pedagogical experience and skills, well documented research skills of relevance to the subject area of the position, and demonstration of good collaborative abilities are also required.
