Human geography forms part of the Department of Geography, Media and Communication at Karlstad University. Human geography focuses on the interaction between humans, society and the environment, locally, regionally and globally.
Human geography is offered as part of different study programmes and courses up to doctoral level at Karlstad University. The subject is responsible for or included in the spatial and social planning programme, the tourism programme, different teacher training programmes, the one- and two-year master programmes in region building, as well as the master programme in geomedia studies.
At Karlstad University, research in human geography has been conducted for around 35 years. Research areas include local and regional development, place creation, mobility, tourism, leisure, culture, landscape issues, geography and media, as well as issues related to the natural and cultural environment. Research in human geography is conducted in two of the university’s designated strong research groups, Geomedia and Research on Subject-Specific Education (includes the Centre for Social Science Education (CSD)), as well as at the Centre for Regional Studies (CRS).
Karlstad University has a long tradition of successful cooperation with the community in human geography, not least through our participation in the above-mentioned centres.
As a member of staff, the successful applicant may have teaching duties as part of various programmes, standalone subject courses, commissioned courses as well as doctoral courses, if applicable. The position further includes supervision, examination, course coordination and development, as well as active participation in the development work done by the subject, department and faculty in the areas of teaching, research and community cooperation.
The position is partially financed through a research project on the experiences of families who moved out of big cities, entitled “Det nya livet utanför storstaden. Erfarenheter av vardagen för barnfamiljer som flyttat ut från storstaden”, which means that most of the research included in the position will be conducted as part of this project. The position includes a 50% research and professional development component.

Further, a completed course in higher education pedagogy, or an equivalent qualification, is required. Under special circumstances, this course may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment.

Special weight is given to thorough knowledge of qualitative methods such as in-depth qualitative interviews and narrative analysis.
Weight is given to broad knowledge of human geography and tourism studies, because the successful applicant is expected to teach these subjects from undergraduate to master level.
