Background
Department of Environmental and Life Sciences at the Faculty of Health, Science and Technology comprises the subject biology, risk and environmental studies and geomatics. In biology, many courses are designed for teacher education programmes for all school levels and at all higher education levels.

Teacher education and research in subject-specific education are prioritised areas at Karlstad University, organised in centres of which SMEER (Science Mathematics and Engineering Education Research) is the education research environment for biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics and engineering faculty staff, engaging in research, inspiring seminar activities and collaboration projects with various departments, organisations and universities. Duties
Duties mainly include teaching, course development, course convening, and supervising student teacher degree projects. Teaching involves courses in the teacher education programmes for pre, primary and secondary schools as well as the short bridging programme (KPU, 120 credits). Depending on qualifications, teaching courses in other areas of biology may be required. Duties also include research in biology education, pursued as part of allocated time for professional development, or based on internal or external research funding. The SMEER Centre provides a relevant research environment for the field of subject-specific education.

Qualification requirements
Eligibility for the position of senior lecturer requires demonstrated teaching expertise and a doctor’s degree in biology, biology education, or science education with a specialization towards biology education, or equivalent. The doctoral degree require to have a clear educational relevance. Appointment as senior lecturer in biology with emphasis on education requires a degree in teaching biology, with preferably 90 ECTS credits in biology. In addition, completed course in higher education pedagogy, or equivalent, is a requirement. This course may, under certain conditions, be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment. Since the language of instruction is mainly Swedish, very good command of Swedish in speaking and writing is necessary.

Assessment criteria
Special weight is given to experience of

  • teaching biology and science in preschool, primary and/or secondary education
  • teaching and developing courses in biology education in teacher education programmes 

Considerable weight is given to

  • experience of carrying out research in biology education that can be linked to supervision of degree projects
  • experience of research relevant to the main departmental research areas (i.e. teaching genetics and education for sustainable development)
  • success in attracting external research funding and in publishing internationally in biology education
  • personal qualities such as abilities to cooperate, take initiatives, show commitment and take a positive attitude to colleagues and students.

Terms of employment

The appointment is full-time non-fixed term employment with starting date 1 August 2019 or by agreement.
