Description
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Karlstad University is now seeking a doctoral student in Mathematics. The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers doctoral programmes in both Mathematics and Computer Science. Mathematics has two main specialisations at doctoral level: Mathematics and Mathematics Education.

Duties
The doctoral student will conduct research on coupled parabolic systems posed in thin heterogeneous domains. The evolution equations are arising from the modeling of reaction-diffusion processes through selective membranes. Typical research questions will refer to the multiscale mathematical modeling (including homogenization), weak-solvability analysis and numerical simulation of such systems when periodically-placed obstacles are affecting the dynamics. The obtained results are expected to contribute to  the development of a well-posedness and computability theory of reaction, diffusion and flow through heterogeneous thin layers. The working topic is imbedded in the VR, Swedish Research Council, funded project: “Homogenization and dimension reduction of thin heterogeneous layers”.

Eligibility
General as well as specific entry requirements have to be met for admittance to doctoral-level studies. General entry requirements are fulfilled by a person who has earned a master’s degree and at least 240 ECTS credits of which at least 60 credits. are studies at master’s level, or who in some other way in Sweden or abroad has acquired largely equivalent knowledge.

Specific entry requirements to the doctoral programme in Mathematics are fulfilled by a person who has earned a master’s degree (of 60 or 120 ECTS cr.) in Mathematics with specialisation in a relevant area, or who hold a master’s degree with equivalent specialisation in Mathematics, or who in some other way in Sweden or abroad has acquired largely equivalent knowledge.

Selection/Admission
Selection of the doctoral student from eligible applicants is based on their assessed ability to complete doctoral studies successfully.

Selection is based on applicants’ earlier study results and special weight is given to the quality of independent research or investigative projects done as part of their earlier studies, and in particular to such projects completed at master’s level and in the proposed research specialisation.
