Background
The Department of Health Sciences in the Faculty of Health, Science and Technology comprises the subjects Oral Health, Nursing, Public Health Science, and Medical Science. The department plays an important role in the nursing and specialist nursing programmes, a public health science master programme and also offers courses in Nursing, Public Health Science and Medical Science. Departmental research centres on the area of health from different perspectives such as public health and nursing. Doctoral students are enrolled in the graduate school Health. The department collaborates closely with Region Värmland.

Courses in medical science are included at Bachelor level in the  degree programmes for nursing, PE teacher education, sport science and sport coaching and also offered as subject courses.

Duties
The Department of Health Sciences is recruiting a senior lecturer in medical science with great interest in teaching. Duties mainly involve teaching anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology, including course coordination and course development.  Instruction in nursing programmes may take place at the university’s clinical training centre. Medical science at Karlstad University is currently in a phase of development which requires course development efforts. The position includes some time for research. The senior lecturer is expected to participate in departmental activities on a daily basis.

Qualification requirements
Applicants for the position of senior lecturer in medical science are required to have a doctorate in biomedical science, or equivalent, and demonstrated teaching expertise, as well as completed course in higher education pedagogy, or equivalent. In special circumstances, this course may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment.

Assessment criteria
Equal weight is given to research and teaching expertise. Special weight is given to documented experience of teaching anatomy, physiology and related subjects in terms of applicants’ ability to plan, implement and evaluate teaching at all university levels and to supervise and examine.  Special weight is also given to clinical experience in health care services. Considerable weight is given to ability to teach both on campus and in distance education. Weight is given to ability to handle learning management systems, and to experience of standard healthcare digital journals and quality assurance systems. Considerable weight is also given to external networking and interest in establishing international contacts.  

Licence to practise in healthcare professions is a valuable qualification, as is experience of development work and methodological development in healthcare. Considerable weight is given to personal qualities such as collaborative skills, ability to create good relationships with colleagues and students and to take initiatives. Considerable weight is also given to commitment to participate in departmental activities on a daily basis.

Terms of employment
The position is full-time non-fixed term employment with starting date 2019-05-01 or by agreement.
