Description
At Karlstad University, English is offered at bachelor, master and doctoral levels. Our offering includes courses on all primary and secondary teacher training programmes, subject courses, as well as English for specific purposes. Research is conducted in both linguistics and literature, through participation in the designated strong Research Group for Culture Studies (KuFo) and the Centre for Language and Literature Education (CSL), affiliated to the strong Research on Subject-Specific Education (ROSE) group.

Duties
Duties mainly involve teaching in the areas of language acquisition and English-specific education, English linguistics, supervision at bachelor and master levels, and research. Duties further include course coordination and development. Additional duties involve active participation in the discipline’s development and community cooperation, particularly in the school sector.

The successful applicant is expected to participate in the daily activities of the department. It is also important that the successful applicant has the ability to work in teaching and other teams.

Qualification requirements
The eligibility requirement for appointment as senior lecturer in English is a doctorate in English linguistics, or equivalent, and documented teaching expertise. A completed course in higher education pedagogy, or an equivalent qualification, is required for appointment as senior lecturer. Under special circumstances, this course may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment.

Assessment criteria
Equal weight is given to teaching and research expertise. Special weight is given to documented teaching experience in English-specific education and second language acquisition, as well as teaching on teacher training programmes. Special weight is also given to experience of teaching English in compulsory and upper-secondary schools in Sweden. 

Weight is given to a teaching degree and to experience of research and development connected to schools and teacher training. Weight is further given to administrative and leadership abilities.

Considerable weight is given to the ability to cooperate, build good relations with colleagues and students, and take initiative. Considerable weight is also given to active participation in the daily activities of the department.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, non-fixed-term position with starting date on 1 July 2019 or at the earliest convenience. A probationary period may be required.

  • copies of degree certificates and other transcripts and certificates documenting qualifications
  • a maximum of ten academic publications and a maximum of five works designed to convey knowledge, such as textbooks, educational software, or popular science articles (indicate your own role in cases of co-authorship)
