Description
Ingesund School of Music (MHI) forms part of the Department of Artistic Studies at Karlstad University and is located at the university’s campus in Arvika. MHI is a prestigious higher education institution that attracts good students and offers a creative workplace comprising modern, well-equipped premises with proximity to colleagues and decision-makers. We offer a Music Teacher programme that equips prospective music teachers to teach in upper-secondary schools, compulsory schools, arts schools and music schools. Since the autumn semester of 2016, MHI and Karlstad University have also been offering a Bachelor programme in Music, while the Music Production programme started autumn 2018. Duties
Duties include supervision and examination of independent projects as well as teaching educational studies in the Music Teacher programme. Some research time is included in the position. The position is located at Ingesund School of Music in Arvika.
Qualification requirements
A PhD in music pedagogy is required, or equivalent academic qualification or other professional experience that pertains to the position’s content and duties. In addition, documented teaching skills and a completed course in teaching and learning in higher education are required. In special circumstances, this course may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment.
Equal weight will be given to teaching skills and to the evaluation of other qualification requirements stated above.
Assessment criteria
Considerable weight is given to teaching experience in higher education. Special weight is given to documented teaching experience in the fields of music pedagogy and educational studies. Special weight is also given to documented experience of supervision and examination of independent projects in higher education.
Special weight is further given to documented research experience in the fields of music pedagogy and music-specific teaching methodology. Weight is given to documented experience of applying for external research funding as well as to ability to inform others of research and development work. Weight is also given to experience of serving as external expert and external reviewer of doctoral theses, as well as to participation in national or international research networks.
Considerable weight is given to good organisational skills regarding the planning and administration of different work duties as well as to ability to be flexible, take responsibility and take initiative. We also value good ability to cooperate with colleagues and the community.
Weight is given to experience of teaching in compulsory school, upper-secondary school, music or arts school, to artistic leadership and artistic practice in cultural life. Weight is further given to applicants’ holding a degree in music teaching, or equivalent.
Teaching is conducted in Swedish and therefore ability to teach in Swedish is given special weight. Considerable weight is given to active participation in the daily work of the subject. Karlstad University aims for gender parity and values ethnic and cultural diversity.
Terms of employment
This is a non-fixed-term position starting by agreement. The employment rate may vary between 50-100% A probationary period of 6 months may be required.
