Description

Social work forms part of the Department of Social and Psychological Studies, together with sociology, psychology and gender studies. The discipline hosts the Bachelor of Science in Social Work Programme. Social work is taught at bachelor, master and doctoral level and the discipline has around 25 staff members who are involved in teaching, research and external collaboration. Currently, the discipline social work at Karlstad University is undergoing changes due to extensive retirement, so there are good opportunities to be involved in the creation of a new research environment.

Duties

The main duties involve teaching on the Social Work Programme and include course coordination, supervision and examination. Duties further include active involvement in research, pursuing one’s own research projects and applying for external research funding in competition. The successful applicant is expected to participate in the development and quality assurance efforts of the discipline, as well as to have current knowledge of disciplinary developments and social changes relevant to social work. Additionally, duties may include supervision and examination at master and doctoral level.

Qualification requirements

The eligibility requirements are a doctor’s degree in social work or equivalent academic qualifications in another discipline relevant to the duties above. Documented teaching skills and a completed course in teaching and learning in higher education are required. In special circumstances, this course may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment. For other qualification requirements, see Ch. 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Assessment criteria

Demonstrated research and teaching expertise in social work are given equal and special weight for this position. Good written and spoken skills in Swedish and English are required. Someone lacking skills in one of these languages may still be appointed, on condition that the person actively works on attaining the necessary skills. Research and teaching expertise must be well documented to facilitate assessment of both scope and quality. Administrative skills must also be documented.

Considerable weight is given to social skills such as the ability to take initiative and cooperate, build good relationships with colleagues, and adopt a positive attitude to colleagues and students, thereby contributing to a good work environment. Further, considerable weight is given to executing work duties responsibly and being able to work independently. The position requires the ability to cooperate within the discipline as well as with the community.

The successful applicant’s interest in developing teaching as well as research is central. The successful applicant will be the person who, upon holistic, qualitative assessment of skills and experience, is found to have the best chances of performing and developing the stated duties and of contributing to the positive development of the Social Work Programme and social work as a teaching and research discipline. If applicants are equally qualified, those whose research and teaching experience is deemed to be most relevant to the discipline will be prioritised. More information about research done in the discipline can be found on its homepage.

Terms of employment

This is a full-time, non-fixed-term position with starting date at the earliest convenience. In order to promote cooperation and a good work environment, the successful applicant is expected to participate in the daily work at Karlstad University. A probationary period may be required.
