Description
At the Department of Health Sciences of the Faculty of Health, Science and Technology, the nursing section offers degree programmes in nursing, specialist nursing (pre-hospital, intensive, theatre and public health care), subject-specific courses, contract training and doctoral studies. Nursing is the main field of study in undergraduate and Master-level degree programmes and is a licentiate/doctoral discipline, affiliated with the cross-faculty graduate school in the health area, The Graduate School of Health.

Research with national and international relevance in the discipline at Karlstad University is pursued under the umbrella theme of “Promoting Health and Quality of Care” and has a focus on present and future needs of nursing, particularly in relation to three areas: Models and Innovation for Patient Safety, Professional development, Competence and Learning and Illness and Health Management.

We are seeking two professors who are willing to participate in developing these research areas further. The positions include 50% funded research time in the first three years and the supervision of a funded doctoral studentship. The members of the department work together towards building strong research in the health area. External cooperation and collaboration is an important aspect of our efforts and locally we have strong partnerships with the County Council of Värmland and the regional municipalities. Our research and teaching environment offers the opportunity for stimulating collaboration with different disciplines and external partners regionally, nationally and internationally.

Duties
Apart from conducting research, the positions involve the overarching responsibility for developing research in the field, including stimulating, initiating and leading research projects, developing internal and external forms of cooperation and applying for external research funding. Further duties are supervision of doctoral students and collaboration with postdoc researchers on different projects. Professors have a leading position and are expected to work with the senior researcher to establish a strong research environment.

In addition to producing high quality research and participating in research projects, duties include efforts to ensure research-informed degree programmes. A professor's duties also involve teaching and developing first, second and third cycle courses and programmes. Most teaching is in Swedish and occasionally in English.

The duties include administrative tasks and assignments in the department and the faculty, thus contributing to advancing cooperation with national and international research environments.

Duties will be designed and adapted to the applicants' expertise and research interests as well as to the needs of the department and the disciplinary research programmes.

Qualification requirements
Eligibility for employment as a professor of nursing requires a doctor's degree in nursing or equivalent and demonstrated research as well as teaching expertise in the nursing discipline (HEO Ch. 4 sect. 3). This means that applicants must have extensive research experience in the disciplinary field and/or made other relevant research contributions to the discipline. Demonstrated ability to initiate, plan, lead and develop research is a requirement, as is the ability to attract external research funding. In addition, experience of external cooperation and of national and international research environments is a requirement.

A further requirement is demonstrated ability to plan, lead and develop undergraduate, master and doctoral courses and programmes, and documented experience of supervising doctoral students. In addition, completed course in higher education pedagogy is required. In special circumstances, this course may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment.

For further qualifications, see HEO Ch. 4 sect. 3 and Karlstad University's regulations Dnr C2018/118

Assessment criteria
The assessment criteria for appointment as a professor shall be the degree of expertise required as a qualification for employment. As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of research expertise or artistic expertise.(HEO Ch. 4 sect. 3).

The assessment of research expertise will primarily consider research quality and the scope and depth of the research. Priority is given to research in areas relevant to the disciplinary research programmes.

The assessment of research expertise will primarily consider the quality of the expertise with special emphasis on the ability to conduct research-informed teaching. Weight is given to applicants' ability to develop and implement teaching in cooperation with external partners. Weight is also given to good oral and written command of Swedish and English as languages of instruction. Applicants who do not master Swedish are expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years.

We attach great importance to personal qualities such as responsiveness, and ability to cooperate, take initiatives and engage in activities.
