Background
The Department of Health Sciences at the Faculty of Health, Science and Technology, Karlstad University, and its nursing section offers courses and degree programmes at undergraduate and master levels in nursing, specialist nursing (emergency care, intensive care, theatre care, and public health nursing) as well as contract courses and doctoral studies. In addition to professional degrees in nursing, general degrees (Bachelor, Master, Licentiate and Doctor) are also awarded in nursing as a main field of study.

Research in nursing at Karlstad University is pursued under the umbrella of the research programme Promoting Health and Quality Care, which comprises four partly integrated research areas: Quality Care and Patient Safety, Ethics and Dignity, Learning and Professional Development, and Health and Prevention. The doctoral studies in nursing are linked to the university's Graduate School of Health.

The department hosts other subjects in the graduate school area, all working together to build a strong public health and health care area, encouraging collaboration with colleagues in different subject and research environments.

Duties
The duties include both teaching and research. Teaching involves planning, course development, teaching and examination in the nursing programme, specialist nursing programmes, course, contract courses and possibly doctoral courses. Instruction is offered on campus as well as off campus (distance learning). Duties include following the development in the subject and societal developments of relevance to the profession. Also included are the tasks of initiating and conducting research designed to develop and strengthen the subject's research profile together with other researchers and the wider community, nationally and internationally. Participating actively in activities aiming to develop teaching and research and applying for external research funding in cooperation with others are important parts of a senior lecturer’s duties. Workload allocation includes time for professional development/research.

Qualification requirements
A doctor's degree in nursing/nursing science is required for this position as well as teaching skills and completed courses in higher education pedagogy or corresponding qualifications, and ability to cooperate with external actors. This course may, under certain conditions, be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment. Duties require good knowledge of Swedish and English. An applicant who lacks such skills may still be appointed on condition that a commitment is made to acquire these skills. For further information on qualification requirements, see Higher Education Ordinance Ch. 4 sect. 4 and Karlstad University's regulations on the appointment and promotion of teaching staff.

Considerable weight is given to good teaching and supervision skills at undergraduate and master levels, and personal qualities such as responsiveness, abilities to cooperate, take initiatives and be involved in activities.
