Description
At the Department of Health Sciences of the Faculty of Health, Science and Technology, the nursing section offers degree programmes in nursing, specialist nursing (pre-hospital, intensive, theatre and public health care), subject-specific courses, commissioned training and doctoral studies. Nursing Science is the main field of study in undergraduate and Master-level degree programmes and a licentiate/doctoral discipline.

The research program in nursing at Karlstad University ‘Promoting Health and Quality of Care' comprises four inter-related research areas: Quality of Care and Patient Safety, Ethics and Dignity, Learning and Competence Development, and Health Promotion and Prevention. The doctoral programme in the discipline is linked to the Graduate School of Health Science at the university.

The department also has other subjects in the health area and all contribute to creating a strong health area. We offer an opportunity to work in an environment of education and research that encourages cooperation across subject settings.

Duties
The duties include teaching and research. Teaching involves planning and developing courses, and instructing and examining students, on campus and in distance education, in undergraduate and specialist nursing programmes, subject-specific courses, commissioned training and, if required, doctoral studies. Duties also include keeping up to date with the development in general and in the field that is of relevance to the teaching profession. A senior lecturer is also expected to initiate and pursue research that develops and promotes the departmental and disciplinary research profile in conjunction with other researchers and the community, nationally and internationally. Participating actively in activities aiming to develop teaching and research and applying for external research funding in cooperation with others are important parts of a senior lecturer’s duties. To a certain degree, time is allocated to professional development/research.

Qualification requirements
A PhD in nursing/nursing science and a professional degree in nursing are required for these positions, as well as demonstrated teaching expertise, completed course in higher education pedagogy, and ability to cooperate externally. An applicant who has not completed the required course may still be employed on condition that the applicant commits to do so within two years. Duties require good language skills in Swedish as well as English. If such skills are missing, a candidate may still be employed on condition that active efforts are made to improve language skills.

For more information on eligibility requirements, see the Higher Education Ordinances Ch.4 sect. 4 and Karlstad University’s regulations for appointments and promotions.

Assessment qualifications
Equal weight is given to research and teaching skills. Special weight is given[ML1]  to specialist nursing qualifications and work experience in the field of any of the specialist nursing programmes offered at Karlstad University as well as research in the field. Experience of teaching in higher education is also a valuable qualification. Considerable weight is given to good ability to teach and supervise students at undergraduate and Master levels and personal qualities such as responsiveness, and ability to cooperate, take initiatives and engage in activities. We also value outreaching participation and networking with the research community as well as success in attracting research funding.

Karlstad University seeks to be an open, international university. We attach great importance to recruiting new employees that have broad international contacts and experience.

For more information on assessment criteria, see the Higher Education Ordinances Ch.4 sect. 4.

Terms of employment
The positions are full-time, non-fixed term employments with starting date at the earliest convenience.
