We are recruiting a senior lecturer to an expanding research team aiming to find sustainable solutions for industry and society through teaching and research.

Background

The Department of Engineering and Chemical Sciences has four subjects: chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental and energy systems, and building and construction engineering, and a staff of around 50 members. Teaching and research in chemical engineering have a focus on chemical engineering processes in forest industrial applications and on the chemical mechanisms of the interaction and properties of materials. Research is pursued in close cooperation with international, national and regional academic as well as industrial partners.

One departmental research group is Pro2BE (Processes and products for circular bioeconomy, http:/www.kau.se/pro2be) with a focus on sustainable solutions in process engineering and product applications for the forest industry and society. Pro2BE has strong regional and national partnerships, with researchers in leading positions in national and international projects.

The subject chemical engineering and the research group Pro2BE are in an expansive phase and need to recruit a senior lecturer.

Duties

Duties include teaching courses in chemical engineering and related areas, carrying out research projects, and developing strategic research and collaboration with other university departments and external partners.

The research group has a prominent position regarding research on process and materials in barrier packaging technology for fibre-based packaging materials. Research is carried out in collaboration with international partners and recognised universities to develop sustainable packaging solutions for preventing product spoilage, mainly food. Renewable materials, innovative coating technology, advanced experimental equipment and different modelling methods are involved.

The senior lecturer is expected to work with, and in the future lead, a team of researchers working on fluid dynamic computation, mass transport models and rheologic characterising of complex fluids. Our laboratories are equipped for coating with water-based dispersions and thermoplastic materials (extruders and hot press). Regionally, there are industrial partners with production and pilot test equipment, which are used to scale up laboratory testing to industrial scale.

Supervising doctoral students and developing undergraduate and doctoral programme courses may also be required, as well as administrative tasks.

Qualification requirements

Eligibility for the senior lecturer position requires demonstrated teaching expertise and a doctor's degree in chemical engineering, or relevant area, or equivalent qualifications. A further requirement is completed course in higher education pedagogy. In special circumstances, this course may be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment..

The position requires substantial knowledge in chemical engineering with specialisation in surface treatment processes and materials properties for coating applications, especially barrier technology.

The Department of Engineering and Chemical Sciences is international in character and English is often used. Good command of English in speech and writing is therefore a requirement.

Assessment criteria

Equal weight is given to teaching and research expertise.

Special weight is given to

  • Research expertise and relevance of research to surface treatment of fibre-based materials
  • Experience of experimental studies, preferably in some of the following fields: transport phenomena, rheology, surface- and colloidal chemistry and surface treatment and characterising surface properties
  • Experience of instrumental development
  • Experience of research applications
  • Experience of externally financed research projects in partnership with industry
  • Demonstrated ability to publish research articles in peer-reviewed science journals
  • Experience of teaching courses in chemical engineering at undergraduate and master levels
  • Participation in doctoral studies, e.g. supervising doctoral students

Considerable weight is given to:

  • Experience of leadership in academia or industry
  • Experience of undergraduate course and pedagogical development
  • Experience of developing doctoral studies
  • Demonstrated good administrative skills.

Weight is given to ability to teach in Swedish.

Karlstad University attaches special weight to applicants' personal qualities. We value cooperative skills, structured work methods, ability to take initiatives, as well as commitment, drive and the ability to create good relationships with colleagues, students and other contacts. We also value a responsible and independent approach to work.

For further information on assessment criteria, see the Higher Education Ordinance Ch 4 and Karlstad University’s appointment regulations.

Terms of employment

  • Letter of application with description of qualifications and research interests in relation to the position and its duties
  • CV
  • Account of teaching and research activities
  • Certificate of course in higher education pedagogy or equivalent qualifications
  • Brief account of experience of other employments, cooperation with non-academic partners and of leadership and administration
  • Plans for future teaching and research
  • List of publications (specify your contribution in co-authored works)
  • Copies of relevant transcripts, diplomas, employment certificates, and letters of recommendations
  • Contact information of at least two references
  • A maximum of ten academic publications and a maximum of five works designed to convey knowledge such as textbooks, educational software, or popular science articles

Submit the application via the University’s web-based recruitment tool and attach all the documents and publications you wish to be considered to the electronic application (do not provide links to them).
