A fully funded PhD position is available within the Distributed Systems and Communications (DISCO) Group at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Karlstad University. Research within DISCO is focused on the development of transport and application layer protocols, cross-layer interactions, networking techniques for low latency Internet communication and the design of future wireless and cellular systems including 5G design and experimentation.
Position
This position is focused on communication solutions for enabling heterogeneous wireless access in 5G. Both network and transport layer solution approaches will be studied as well as cross-layer approaches will be researched.
It is expected that the candidate performs research in the given area through a combination of experimentation, simulations and/or network emulation. Knowledge or experience in areas such as cellular and wireless networks, communication protocols, congestion control, packet scheduling is therefore desirable. Excellent programming skills as well as good oral and written communication skills in English are required. As part of the position, the candidate will work with network simulators such as ns3 but also prototype solutions in real systems such as Linux.
The candidate should be able to work independently, as well as in a team; and be enthusiastic about pushing the state-of-the-art. Collaboration with academic and industry partners through national/international research projects is expected. Part of the work will be carried out within a project funded by Deutsche Telekom.
Eligibility
Eligible for this position are candidates with a University degree of 240 ECTS, from which at least 60 ECTS were awarded for courses at advanced level and have a Master’s degree or the Swedish Magister or Civilingenjör Degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or equivalent. Eligible are also those candidates who have achieved corresponding degrees or knowledge in Sweden or abroad.
Terms
The position is limited to 4 years, but can be prolonged for up to one more year, if the PhD student also takes on other research, teaching or administrative tasks besides her/his PhD research. Those tasks should not exceed 20% of the time of a full-time position.
