Description

The Faculty of Health Science and Technology has an opening for a full-time post-doctoral research fellow at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science in the field of computer networking with focus on Network Function Virtualization (NFV). The position is a full-time position for one year with the possibility to extend for another year based on mutual agreement. The starting date for the position is August 1 but earlier starting date is also possible if the candidate can start sooner.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science consists of the two research subjects: Mathematics and Computer Science. It has a research and teaching staff of more than 60 persons. In Computer Science, research and education are focused on computer networking and distributed systems, computer security and privacy, and software engineering. Both research and education are conducted in close cooperation with international, national and regional partners from both academia and industry.

Computer Science is currently in the expansion phase to further strengthen its focus areas to consolidate and develop its international position in research. It has recently been established as an excellent research group at Karlstad University from which the funding for the expansion is provided to strengthen research. The Knowledge Foundation of Swedish has also granted additional funds to develop a research profile within the Computer Science focus areas in close collaboration with industry.

Duties

The post-doctoral fellow will work in the framework of the recently funded project, entitled “NFV-Optimizer: Profiling Network Virtualized Functions and Optimizing their Performance for Telecom Clouds” by the Knowledge Foundation of Sweden. NFV-Optimizer will model the impact of virtualization on Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) and study their behavior as well as their inter-relation complexities when they are cascaded to build higher-level frameworks for Network Function Virtualizations (NFVs). Together with our industry partners, our ultimate aim is to model, optimize, design, and implement NFV specific profiling/optimization frameworks to study VNF Service Chains (VNF-SCs), and efficiently optimize them to close the gap between their performance and those of currently deployed counterparts using proprietary boxes. For this post, the post-doctoral fellow will work/collaborate closely with our industry partners in the project (Ericsson AB and VoerEir). English is the working language in the research group.

Requirements

To be eligible for the position, applicants are required to hold a PhD in Computer Science (or equivalent qualifications) with a specialization in Computer Networking or Cloud Computing. Unless special grounds presented, the candidate must have completed the degree no more than three years before the last date for the application.

Assessment grounds

In the assessment procedure, emphasis will be placed on the applicant's scientific experience in relation to the NFV-Optimizer; that is, having

(1) Knowledge or experience in principles and tools to work with cloud platforms such as OpenStack, VMware, etc.;

(2) Conceptual knowledge about Network Function Virtualization (NFV);

(3) Knowledge or experience in designing and/or implementing optimization techniques such as heuristics, AI-based, etc.; and

(4) Excellent oral and written communication skills in English;

(5) Demonstrated ability to work independently and within groups.

Because the post-doctoral fellow needs to interact with other parts of the university as well as with the community, it is of great importance that the candidate has the ability to collaborate with other groups.

The application should include:

  • Personal letter describing the applicant and her/his research interests in relation to the announced position
  • A detailed CV
  • List of published works
  • Copies of relevant diplomas, certificates and recommendation letters
  • Contact information of at least two reference persons

Application should be submitted electronically via the Karlstad University web-based recruitment tool, MyNetwork with uploaded attachments. Documents that cannot be sent electronically, should be sent to: Karlstads universitet, Registrator, 651 88 KARLSTAD, state ref.no REK2017/26.

Application deadline: 2017-03-21

We look forward to your application!
