Description

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Karlstad University, Sweden, has an opening for two permanent positions as senior lecturers in software engineering.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science consists of the two research subjects: Mathematics and Computer Science, and has a research and teaching staff of more than 70 persons. In Computer Science, research and education are focused on computer networking and distributed systems, computer security and privacy, and software engineering, and are conducted in close cooperation with international, national and regional partners from both academia and industry. Computer Science has currently been established as an excellent research group at Karlstad University and is in an expansion phase to further strengthen its focus areas and consolidate and develop its international position in research and education.

The senior lecturers will work as members of the Software Engineering Research Group (SERG), which currently focuses on different aspects of quality in long-living software systems, such as detection and mitigation against software architecture erosion and other forms of technical debt, design and evolution of security- and privacy-critical systems, and quality assurance techniques, such as testing, for long-living software systems. The senior lecturers will also play an important role in the further development of education in computer science and software engineering within the department.

For these positions, we are therefore looking for strongly motivated individuals who has a strong research record in, or related to, the focus areas mentioned above as well as a strong teaching experience in software engineering and related areas.

The candidates are also expected to teach courses at both graduate and undergraduate levels. These courses include classes focusing on software engineering subjects but also on related or fundamental computer science subjects, such as data structures and algorithms, programming languages, formal methods, or databases. Educational activities also include supervision of PhD students, course administration and development, and supervision of thesis work at graduate and undergraduate levels. The successful candidates are expected to teach and supervise partly in Swedish within a couple of years.

Research is part of duties (50% of full time) for the first two years. After that the candidates are expected to successfully attract external research funding to continue researching at 50% of duties or more.

Applicants are required to hold a PhD in Computer Science with a specialization in software engineering or related areas, or have corresponding qualifications, to be eligible for the position. The ability to teach software engineering and related computer science subjects at undergraduate and graduate levels is also required. Completed formal training in higher education pedagogy is also a requirement. If the applicant is missing this training, corresponding courses should be completed within two years of employment as part of the professional development commitment.

Assessment grounds

In the assessment procedure, equal emphasis will be placed on research and teaching skills. Special attention is given to well-documented pedagogical experience and skills, especially related to software engineering and related fields and the breadth of the teaching experience. Further emphasis will be put on well-documented research skills and his/her experience of applying for funding and to initiate and conduct national and international research projects in collaboration with other academic and industrial partners. Weight is given to academic or industrial research after having obtained their PhD degree.
